I have an older break-top Webley short barrelled revolver in .38 S&W and want to find a load for 158gr. SWC gas checked cast bullets. I would like to use up some of my Red Dot powder that's been sitting on the shelf with out purpose. If you have a load, I'd like to hear from you.

Lyman cast bullet handbook has 2.1 to 2.8 red dot with a spread of 605-770 fps.

However they do say that the loads are for solid frame revolvers in good condition.

I noticed the Lyman info as well but I think it might be a bit hot for this old break top.
I tried 2.5 gr. and there were obvious signs of pressure... flat primers and difficulty ejecting the spent cartridges. Not really fussy about hanging it on the wall but for the limited amount of use it'll get, I'm too cheap to switch bullets and powder. How about Blue Dot. Any experience with it for break-tops?

Blue dot is too slow, try Unique because it's a wide use powder.

My Lyman manuals state "We do not recommend the use of reloads in revolvers of the top break design due to there age and relative weakness."

It aslo states the the load data is for solid frame revolvers.

FWIW there aren't any Red Dot or Unique loads in these manuals for this caliber.

RePete.

From Ken Waters "Pet Loads",

158 Hornady swaged SWC 2.8 grns Red Dot - Not sufficiently accurate
158 " " RN 2.7 " " - Normal

<comments are his>

He also stated with these loads "British break top Webley's and Enfield's are safe".
