WTF??? Anyone else's CMMG conversion have terrible accuracy???

I have an 5.56 11.5" SGW CAR-15 (had it over 20 years and love it) using my CMMG .22 conversion kit and it shoots very well! Loves copper plated American Eagle and believe or not it actually out shoots many of my friend's 1022 Rugers!!

But man does it get dirty I always clean it with solvent cleaner after an outing and run it dry.

Loves the Black Dog mags as well.

I was told it would not have the accuracy of a dedicated .22 lr as the barrel is not really made for that size,...222 vs ..224 ish.?? I know that my Mossberg 517T is more accurate with same ammo

Once you get all the lead out of it switch to a copper jacketed round.
My CMMG kit only functioned well when it was really clean. I got tired of it and sold it.
One of these days I'll put together a dedicated 22LR upper with a 12 twist barrel.
Watch that all that lead that is getting left behind doesn't plug off your gas port. If you switch back to 223 and it isn't cycling properly you'll know where to look for the problem.

Good luck

I don't understand how this would affect a .223 round when you change the upper do you not change the gas block to whatever happens to be on the upper your switching??

He wasn't changing uppers. He was using the same upper and replacing the .223 bolt carrier group with the .22 conversion kit. I own the discontinued Spike's Tactical conversion kit which is virtually identical to the CMMG kit. At the end of a range session with .22 LR the manufacturer recommends shooting some .223 to clean the carbon build up in the gas tube, or clean the pipes I guess.... ;)

So on my last two range outings I've noticed that my AR + CMMG conversion was spraying bullets all over the place whereas it use to be quite accurate. Even the sound of the ammo when it fired seemed bizarre. At first I assumed it was an ammo issue but the ammo works just fine in my P226 classic. Today I inspected the end of the conversion kit that slides into the chamber of the barrel and it looks a bit jagged.

Pics up later. Anyone else have this issue???

If it is in fact missing bits of steel is my barrel going to be damaged?

From looking at your photos your kit needs a good cleaning and avoid the lead bullets. Stick with copper washed. Like others have said, take a .22 chamber brush on a drill and use it in the chamber insert after you soak it in whatever cleaning fluid you use.

After a lot of use the neck on my chamber insert cracked. I contacted Spike's Tactical and sent them photos. They mailed me a free chamber insert. If yours is damaged I'm sure CMMG will do the same. However, I am sure it is dirty and needs to be cleaned.

It is very dirty. I've got most of the gunk out of it now but the barrel / chamber insert isn't as clean as I want it to be. I think it was so dirty that the bullets were being deformed as they left the barrel, hence the strange shot noise and the terrible accuracy.

I think you are right. That conversion can be disassembled for cleaning. I would give it a good soaking and then buzz internally with the bronze brush. Another trick I have found works well for me is to coat all the areas that get fouled up badly with Froglube before shooting. The FL keeps the gunk in suspension for easier cleaning. Do not forget to clear the chamber and bore before shooting!
