I am interested in getting a standard M1 Garand converted into a "Tanker Model"...............any possible problems that I shud be aware of?

I read somewhere that there was a gunsmith in edmonton that was doing this work. Can anyone give me a contact point/info.

thanks:sniper:

Cutting and welding the oprod properly. Spring length. Cutting and machining the barrel end so the gas cylinder goes on straight and tight. Cutting the value of that Garand in half. Its sick and wrong, dont do it.

Personally I think you'd be better off to a) buy one already modified or b) do it to a Norinco M-305. ymmv though, so good luck with your project.

I would second what beltfed said, get a M-305 and cut and chop that if you must. As far as Edmonton gunsmiths go I haven't had much luck lately with them. KS always way under estimates what the job will cost, quote $95 to cut and crown a revolver barrel and resolder the front sight on, showed up to pay the bill and $350.00 was on the invoice, I don't think so, worth more than the revolver. Done this twice to me and of course for the last time. Lock and load take for ever to do nothing, almost 1 year for a 1911 trigger job with all parts supplied by me. Wolfs is great for small jobs that involve hunting rifles and that is about it. I haven't tried any other gunsmiths so I can't comment on them.

There was no such thing as an issue "tanker" M-1.
However, as much as it pains me to see this done, Gunparts sells a conversion kit for $236.20US plus $1 shipping in either .30-06 or .308. Includes the barrel, op rod & spring, hand guard assembly and follower rod. You'll require the U.S export permit that requires a Canadian import permit to get.
If you do this, be prepared for a significant increase in muzzle blast and a significant loss of velocity.
