I was a a garage sale today and found what I thought was a nice looking bayonet and sheath. The guy said he paid $100 for it in Quebec about eight years ago and just wanted to get his money back out of it. He said it was from WW1. The sheath had a hand made beaver fir cover that easily slid off. I didn't buy it because I know nothing about the value and history of such things, did I make a mistake? I know its not much information to go on.

Found a crappy picture from the garage sale notice. You can just see the bayonet above the gun to the left of the teapot.

Yep that's a fossil. I know because I'm looking at a display case full right now behind my dining room table:D. It's a fossil of the shell of a ammonite ( a squid like predator) it's from the Jurassic time frame, though other varieties go back a lot farther (Cretaceous time frame) Sorry for going off topic boys!

From your pic, I would say that is a rusted example of a Ross bayonet. It may or may not be one of the cut down/modified bayos done by the military. The Springfield is more interesting. That ammonite is a very nice specimen. We don't see many of those in our neck of the woods. I would love to fine one that size. I've never been able to find complete examples.

Back to the bayo, has the scabbard been covered with beaver fur or is it a home made rig. That sort of thing has appeal to some collectors as folk art and may easily bring $100. The bayo itself isn't worth that amount, especially if it is as rusty as the pic portrays.

The garage sale is still on today and the pickers were there two hours before I arrived yesterday so I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of this stuff is still available. By Springfield are you referring the rifle? He wants $300 for that. Yes the scabbard is covered with beaver fir...see op. I didn't ask about the price of the ammonite but I can if you're interested.
