Hey there, hoping someone with a greater knowledge of WW2 medals and service stars can chime in and help me identify my grandfathers medals.

Recently was sent a photo of what remained of my grandfathers canadian ww2 medals(poor quality photo). He was infantry Sgt.Harrington, enlisted before the official outbreak and stayed in europe for another three years after 1945 for logistics and cleanup(burying munitions and rifles). He rarely spoke of what he encountered but I know he served in Italy, Holland and France. I have identified all but one medal. It is a campaign star with white/ red /blue evenly sized left to right colorarion, I cant find any pictures of examples anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

He has the top two, germany and italian. The thitd one looks similar to the bottom ribbon, but is clearly white red and blue from left to right. I was told by a cousin in the military that it is the 39-45 service star. Starnge because every example I have seen has a light blue band like the above picture and not white and the order is reversed.

Thanks for chiming in!

If the medal is what you see in picture three then you have a 1939-45 Star. There are no variants on its ribbon so there are two options. Either the ribbon has migrated onto the medal at some point in some unofficial way or the ribbon has been in an environment where the blue has been bleached white.

Im leaning towards that senario, or faded baby blue to white. Crappy replacemnt and incorrect application is very likely. They are in the hands of a questionable family member, no one has access to see them now.
cheers, Ash

something nagging me in the back of my head about a white red blue ribbon. I just can't place it.

it is possible that the ribbon is that faded that he light blue looks white. I would expect the red to be fairly badly washed out as well.

but I agree its not the correct ribbon for that set.

Me as well but I looked up British & Canadian medals from Kipling’s Afghanistan to mine and I couldn’t find it.
