hope i get some answers, i acquired a "ww2" german helmet, did some research, believe its a 1918 model re-issued during ww2,
my question is, what are the two "rivnuts" for above the temples? the ones on my helmet dont appear to be threaded, but a previous owner had "restored" it and they may be full of paint..
i have found some helmets have them and some dont, even in differant styles and dates of production.
chime in if you know...:)

Those lugs on the WW1 German Helmet always did look like a place where you would attach 100,000 Volt electrical cables to jump start Frankenstein!

It's to attach the brow plate - the "STIRNPANZER" - designed for trench raiding parties and snipers, but rarely used. 50,000 produced vs 7 million or so helmets.

They were also used to attach a sniper's face plate. It was similar to brow plate pictured, but it covered the face not the forehead. It had a small rectangular slit cut ahead of the right eye for aiming.

If you wanted you could wear it in conjunction with SAPPENPANZER armour for the complete protective package.

Something like interceptor body armour, but with medieval materials ;)

How effective was the armour plate for the belly and the mellon? Or was it? Not used in WW2.

Wouldn't you get whiplash or a broken neck taking a shot(s) to the helmet plate, especially if it were sustained MG fire (providing the bullet didn't just penetrate armour and helmet)?

i am thinkin if you caught a round in the forehead it would ring your bell for sure!
i dont really think it would stop a 7.62x54r do you?
the fact that the hemet alone is heavy, the added weight, i guess thats why they didnt take hold

it wont broke your neck a bullet doesn't have the mass and i don't think that could stop a direct hit probably good against the shrapnel .
