over the past few months we've cleaning out the family farm to ready it for auction:( anyways, one item that turned up was my great uncle Owens ID tags from the second world war. simply two leather discs, one round, one hexagonal. they are stamped with the following

L134274
PTE
O Keating
RC
CDN

i know the L prefixe of the serial number signifies he was from military district "L", basiclly all of Saskatchewan, and the "PTE" obviously means private. the CDN = Canadian. what i'm wondering is if using the srerial number can i find out more about his service record? i found a nominal roll of the South Saskatchewan Regiment on the web, only one Keating on ther. Company QuarterMaster Sargent R.O Keating. also a relation, but not the same one. i'm told there should be 5 or 6 Keatings on that list.

Beautiful display....... :)

Regimental Numbers of the Canadian Army 1936-1960 (Compiled by Clive M. Law)

The "L1" series was definitely Regular force as the "L4,5,6,7" series was Reserve.

The number L134274 is not listed in any range.

Range = L110000 - L119999 which was assigned to Active Force MD12 (No 12 District Depot, Saskatoon)

then it skips to

Range = L150001 - L150500 which was assigned to MD1 District Record Officer

The number seems one digit long for most regiments. Just to make sure Kevin, can you check to make sure you copied the number down correctly?

sorry, stamping is hard to read

it's L154274. there is also an "A" stamped on the back

Ok, here you go.......

Range = L154001 - L15450 was assigned to MD11 District Record Officer.

I don't know what the "A" stands for.
