So I already posted this question in red rifles and was told I would probably have better luck In this Forum, so here goes!

My family on my fathers side originated from the states (not sure how far back) but I know that it was in New Hampshire. I found out that my grandfather served in the military during WWII as a sharp shooter where he earned a few medals over the course of his service. When he came back 2 of his sons had to do service, my fathers two oldest brothers (Large family my father had 7 brothers) that's why my grandfather moved his family to Quebec, he didn't want any of his Kids to serve in a war.

Anyways, that as far as i'm gonna go with the family history, When my grandfather passed, my dad was suppose to inherit his military rifle but my uncle made off with it. My uncle from what I was told kept it for a few years before it was stole from his house. My dad was quite choke up about this. I would like to find out what kind of rifle my grandfather would have used, Im guessing probably a M1903 Springfield? secondly how hard are they to find?

Cheers!

Sounds like you'll have to dig up his records to find out more details. Don't be surprised though if it turns out that he was just a marksman, rather than a "sniper". Family stories tend to change with the telling over a few generations. It's very doubtful he would have been able to retain his service rifle anyway, as it would be recorded by SN against his name. He might well have picked up a casualty's rifle and brought that home on the quiet, though US troops weren't allowed to retain US isssue weapons as registered trophies or souvenirs, naturally!

I agree, more than likely a Springfield.

From the reading I have done some M1C's saw service in Europe and in the Pacific, but that M1D's were assembled late war and post war. I have read mixed reports, some sources stating that M1D's were used in the Pacific but not in Europe and others stating that they were just assembled during the war.
