What ammunition are you guys using in your 7.62x39 hunting rifles (especially the SKS deer hunters)? What works well from experience?

If I had one, and didn't handload, I'd probably go with Previ, or S&B in an SKS, and Lapua in a bolt gun. If you do handload, buy a case of surplus ammo, then pull the FMJs, and replace them with expanding bullets of equal weight.

I know lots of guys who use Prvi soft points. They work ok, but certainly aren't on par with modern hunting bullets...

Boomers suggestion of pulling ball ammo and replacing with .308 hunting bullets works very well, just be careful to seat them properly as the SKS will be finicky if OAL is wrong.

Hornady 7.62x39 123 grain SST
and it's pretty cheap for an expanding factory round.

Try the federal fusion. Probably the very best deer load for the 7.62x39. Mine shoots then very well and they are sure killers inside of 100 yards.

The one thing you have to worry about with commercial cartridges are the problems/concerns with slam fires.. if you pull some milsupr FMJ's you get the same old hard primers and don't have to worry about it.. if you stick with the same weight bullet, you can also reuse the same old powder..

that's what I'm doing, as soon as I Can find someone how was the bullets in stock..

Prvi 123gr pointed soft points from my Baikal IZH-18 single, it shoots them boringly accurate at 100 yards. I haven't used them on a deer yet, but they should work well. Even if the are an old fashioned cup an core bullet.

Hopefully I will be able to report after hunting season on how the MFS and/or Federal Fusion work. I have some of each, just need to see how each shoots and pick one to hunt with.
