I was out to the range this morning. Tried some 55gr AE and Tula 62gr.....I went down to gas setting 1 and S,....and it still ejected in a little pile...albeit a shorter distance but all ejected and kept going. Is this normal? I have been scouring the interwebs....no definite answer. I assumed at gas setting S,, I would have to hand cycle like a bolt action.

thanks....i did manage to turn the gas off...basically take off the gas black selector. THEN...it becomes bolt action. I think the holes might be dirty.

Isn't btw 1 and 2 no holes so bolt action.

Take the selector out, line up the number vs. the hole, there is one notch btw numbers that is solid.

15 feet ejection distance is optimal/normal, remember that we're talking about a piston gun with a heavy bolt carrier here!
The important thing is to run in your gun one level below trigger slap level for the first 400 rounds or so.
After the run in period, you can dial it down to a 15 feet ejection distance (my rifle would eject at 30 feet during its run it).

The manual says lowest setting without trigger slap. Had it out to the range today and had to turn it up to 4.Wasn't ejecting the last shell on the lower settings.

what setting should it be in for initial break in period?

First and foremost Stevo is correct, whatever setting it reliably runs on.

The answer to the quote and OP also lies in the ammo you're using. Early versions of the XCR specifically said to use higher end factory ammo for 200 rounds before switching to something more affordable like Wolf. Some ammo will run at a higher pressure than others.

If you have to break it in at setting 4 then that's where you should start and move it down as it gets broken in. Some XCR I've had permanently had to run at setting 2 once broken in, while others would eject 15ft on S. It boils down to how your specific XCR is behaving, and yours is not outside of norm.

My manual states (newest gen, bought right before keymod forend released) for break in run the gun pretty wet and on the highest gas setting for only 40 rounds. Then turn down the gas until it is consistently ejecting the spent cases 9-15 feet. I've had no issues following this.

The manual needs an update ;). Although I'm glad that people do RTFM and that it worked out for you :D.

mine ejects decent on S setting...although perhaps the gas valve was kinda dirty...i cleaned it out...and after I removed the flash hider, I noticed there was a lot of crap in it as well. Need a brush to get that crap out.
