Just wondering if anyone else has received their XCR in MLOK yet???

EDIT::: 2018/05/26...

Ok... I've trolled enough...

Originally a quad rail heavy barrel bought off the EE... sent to Black Box Customs to have the 3, 6 and 9 side rails milled off and MLOK mods added. Finished off with a beautiful grey cerokote.

Its fantastic... and was much more affordable than buying a new keymod and faster than waiting for RA to get the MLOK to Canada.

Been eyeing up a XCR-M 18.6" heavy barrel "mini" (not micro) FDE M-lok in .308 on their website.

What's the difference between the type-2 and type-3 gas system?

Type 2 gas system is a short stroke piston design and similar to the M14/M305. Type 3 is a low profile gas block and is a long stroke piston design.

Type 2 is standard on M models, Type 3 is used on competition uppers so the gas block goes under the hand guard.

I've seen M with Type 3 gas system and they will work but are not standard. Also Type 3 in comparison to Type 1 it has more gas settings and different gas port sizes.

I prefer Type 1 on XCR-L and Type 2 on XCR-M, but of course I don't like or have competition length uppers.

That's great news.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the work cost and what was the turn around time for the job? I'd be interested in having one done. Feel free to PM if you don't want to make it known here. Thanks

Blackbox is a forum sponsor. Will leave it to them for cost quotes (Seriously. Call them. Or at least check out the instagram account for gun pics.) I'm neither employed or sponsored by them... so I won't speak for their quotes or pricing. I will say that the price to cerokote and mill was about what you'd pay for a quality freefloat rail on an AR build. The work took 2 months (exactly 8 weeks) which I was fine with and was told going into this. They are a busy shop and one needs to get in line.

I should have weighed it prior but alas I was too eager to strip it down and run it over to their shop. The weight saving is easily felt though when shouldering it. Those quad rails are very front heavy. Even with the heavy barrel it feels very much the same as a keymod if that helps anyone.

Thanks for sharing this and thanks for the info Fenceline. I have a couple other projects on the go right now and when they're caught up I'll definitely look into having one of my xcr's done by them. That Mlok looks fantastic. I'm not a fan of hanging crap off my guns so the Mlok vs keymod debate means nothing to me. I just think the xcr looks 100x better with the Mlok.

As far as the weight savings goes, you don't save a ton of weight by milling off the rails but the weight you do loose comes off where it makes a big difference. If you put a light barrel on that gun you won't even think you have the same rifle in your hands that you had before. But I will forewarn you the light barrels are pencil thin and don't shoot as well. I went back to using the heavy barrel on my 556.

I have a keymod xcr in 556, another keymod in 6.8 spc and my quad rail xcr is in 7.62x39. All heavy barrels. I hardly shoot the 7.62x39 because the balance really sucks compared to my keymod rifles. It actually feels worse than my keymod xcr-m.

I thought about trading my quad rail gun for another keymod but my lgs wanted $750 to trade. Now that I've seen this, and have an idea that the cost is reasonable, I won't be trading for another keymod.

One last thing. What do you think about having the milling work done on the upper and then stripping the cerakote from the entire firearm and sending the whole thing out for anodizing instead of redoing the cerakote?

I don't care for fancy colors, I'm only thinking which (anodizing or cerakote) would give me the most durable surface treatment.

What are your guys thoughts on the xcr heavy barrel vs the pencil barrel. I def notice my groups open up large once my pencil barrel heats up.

I like the feel of the light barrel and keymod upper however I went back to using the heavy barrel. No comparison in accuracy. Less than 100 rounds through the light barrel and I took it off. After 3-4 shots the pencil barrel shot like chit. Even once the heavy barrel gets hot it doesn't shoot nearly as bad as the pencil barrel. My light barrel now sits in my bin of miscellaneous firearms parts most likely never to be used again.

I may even sell it one day.
