Looking at getting my first black gun and have narrowed my choice to the non-restricted XCR-L. For the guys that have them or have had what are your opinions between the older Type 1and the newer Type 2 models?? I understand the wieght differance the new Key Mod vs the Quad Rail as well as the FAST stock but I was wondering about internals. I see the bolt and recoil buffer are differant. Is the trigger better in the new Type 2?? Just wondering basically if the supposed improvments Rob Arms has made to the new Type 2 are working out in making it a better choice than the older one. I know that newer always doesnt mean better. Thanks

My XCR-L is the model just prior to the Keymod. The only reason I would sell my XCR, would be to get a keymod. They look and feel great, and the weight, while not a real issue for me, feels significant with the pencil barrel.

The original skeleton stocked XCR-Ls have been known to have function and Loctite issues. The 1.5 (?) FAST stocked heavy barrel version corrected many of the original problems. I had one of these. The trigger was really nice. The gun never shook loose but then again, I didn't shoot it much to find out. I sold it last year to a CGNer and he has had FTF and FTE issues with it. BUT he also emailed me yesterday to say he just shot a 1MOA group with match ammo with it!
I've only played with a Gen 2 as you call it. They are waaay lighter and easier to move with. If $ was not an issue, I would only look at the keymod model and skip the rest, esp. the very first skeleton stocked ones unless you like fiddling with your guns!

Like most I'm sure I would like to spend as little as possible and put the savings towards ammo, but I only plan on buying one. Wheather ya spend +-$2300 on a used one or +-2800 on a new one it doesn't amount to a huge difference when spending over 2 grand on one. The general vibe I have got is the new Key-mod Type 2 style is the more desired one to own. Thanks for the above opinions, any others would be much appreciated

I had keymod HB , once I added the rails it was no different than the previous revision. There's still some new 2014 quad rails around, and to me are no different than the keymod once you add all the rails. And more than likely you will add rails.

My keymod HB , 3 small rails, scope and mount , weighed a touch over 11 lbs. light barrel would save you a lb ? Quad rail would add a lb? So your talking anywhere from 10 to 12 lbs.... Does it make a difference ?

The weight is here nor there for me. Wonder why did they change the bolt and some internals such as the recoil buffer? Was it to to help it function or fix issues?? Wonder what the reason was?

They changed it for a reason for sure, something to do with making the functioning better. I believe they made changes to the model ,just prior to keymod. I was looking at a new quadrail HB ,the other day,it's listed at $2350. So far as I could find out,the only diff between that and the keymod is the forend. And people keep saying that accuracy is just as good with the pencil barrel as the heavy barrel. But only for a couple of shots. But then buy 10 rnd mags and shoot more than a couple of rnds. So to me the HB makes more sense, for a semi auto that uses 10 and 15 rnd mags.

I wonder what the odds are of a reclass of these XCRs down the road to restricted class. The price of them is a little hard to swallow when you see what you can get a restricted AR for but being able to shoot them freely at this point and time lessons the pain for sure. I am just wondering before I go and drop the money on one. I am totally new to the black gun world so not sure if this has been discussed before??

I wouldn't worry to much about the future, it may never come:) I had an Su16,reliable and light I had an XCR-L reliable and heavy. The XCR- is accurate enough and it's a nice rig but it has a few bolts that shake loose if you do any sort of heavy firing. It's a good bench or bipod gun but not much use for shooting off hand. ( maybe a couple of shot). Anyway I've since sold it and I'm going to give the J48 a try. One more thing, when you shoulder them in the store , it's not the same as when you add Optics, mount, bipod, sling, loaded mags. Understand ?

With bill C42 hopefully it will stave off any reclassification based on emotion rather than function for awhile, until Liberal and the NDP figure out a way to use UN treaty to ban all firearms altogether.
