Intro:
My XCR in ODgreen is one the late model, receiver halves fitting tightly. The upper is well made but I've always been bugged by the lower finition. There were some burrs left on top of the lower and the magwell looked like made on friday afternoon. The magwell lips were much wider than the bevelled area, the bevel was unequal and there was 3 small horizontal surfaces between the bevel and the interior walls.

Correction:
I got a Dremel-like tool to remove the burrs and rework the magwell bevel and then sanded it. I'm happy with my magwell, it's now wider, nicer and smoother.

Questions:
The XCR receivers are made of aluminum right?
Naked aluminum will eventually stain and corrode right?
Is Robarms using Gunkote, Cerakote or what?
Would you buy a small can of black Tremclad or what?

Cheers,
Phil

The tremclad might go on to thick resulting in clearance and feed issues with the mags.

It's only for the bevelled area, the walls were nice so they kept their original finish. I'm only thinking to brush the naked surface.

Product #15125 3oz bottle.

So that's aluminum right?
That seems like a good suggestion. From Brownells only or automotive shops too?

XCR lower are anodized, any firearm finish would do the trick, if you really want to go the Tremclad route just make sure you degrease the surface first, get a good quality primer and layer the paint in thin coats with plenty of drying in time between each coat.

Well I'll try that: Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black Metal Finish

Thank you guys!

BTW, am I the first to rework his magwell? Is there a better hand-tool than Dremel for that?

I've got the caswell black oxidizer. I've got some for stainless, some for
aluminum and some for steel/iron. The steel/iron stuff work great, stainless is pretty crappy and the aluminum stuff is about as durable as carbon blackenng with a lighter. It's pure junk. I know it's a different brand but the acids are the same. Don't waste a cent on it.
