Just got back from the range, and quite impressed I might add.
I don't own an AR, so I can't compare to that, but I do own a SL8 / G36 Clone, and will make comparisons to that.
The ergonomics of the XCR really are nice, every time it's shouldered, you get a good cheek weld, and line of sight is bang on with the Yankee sights. The rifle is slightly front heavy, being a heavy barrel of course. I would imagine a 16" carbine would put the center of gravity right in between your hands. In comparison to my SL8, the SL8 is heavier at 9 lbs, XCR at 8 lbs. Both unloaded. The XCR fits me better then the SL8, fits like a glove.
The safety is in an easy position to work, as is the mag release and bolt catch. I'm still out on the charging handle though, I can't stack mags without staggering them. This rifle seems to be more right hand oriented, and the safety is only on the left side. You can easily support the rife with your right hand while working the charging handle. Obviously not an ambidextrous rifle as the SL8, the controls where worked with ease as a right hander.
Trigger was not bad, but not the greatest either. There is a bit of take up before you can feel the sear, but was quite crisp after that. I guess for a battle rifle, it was quite good.
As I chambered the first round, and pulled the trigger "Click".. WTF I thought, pulled the charging handle back, while looking into the chamber area, and the round shot out and nailed my safety glasses.. (Man this thing really spits the shell out!, I've never seen an extractor mech work this well.) Looked at the round, the primer hadn't been touched.. I pulled the bolt assembly apart, looked like everything was intact, put it back together and chambered the second round. Pulled the trigger "Click".. WTF, looking at the bolt it didn't seem to be all the way down, tried the forward assist, it didn't move anymore forward. Ejected that round, and tried again, this time being sure I pulled the charging handle ALL the way back, it chambered correctly. Now I'm not sure if this problem was because I was using reloads or not, but they had all been fully resized.. Any ways 200 rounds later, the problem hasn't come back, seems I was a pussy and only pulling the handle back 3/4 of the way or something.
First 3 shots @ 50 yrds, 2 hole's touching, 1 close by. All 3 rounds slightly left, dead on vertical. Adjusted the sight a bit, next 5 rounds a nice pattern around the bull. I was pulling the bore snake though after every 5 rounds.
Target left = 50 yrds first 3 shots. Target Mid = 50 yrd shots 4-8 Target Right = Some other 50 yrds shots.
Moved back to 100 yrds, and put a few hundered down range. Bagged and taking my time, I could get close to around 2 MOA @ 100 Yrds with open sights, now I know this rifle will shoot better with optics! With open sights this is about on par with my SL8. I'm going to have to go optic shopping soon, and see what she can do after that.
Left = 100Yrds Sierra match king 52Grn. Mid = 100 Yrd Winchester bulk ammo 45 Grn. Right = 100 Yrd Nosler B-Tip 55 Grn
This rifle ejects just as advertised, at 2 O'Clock position, and it throws them out there, like 7 - 8 feet. If someone was benched beside me, they could probably shoot my brass like skeet. I think I can tone this down with the position of the gas orifice. I don't know of many rifles that will toss brass ahead of you, but makes it easy to ID my brass from buddies, all of mine is in front of the firing line.
In all, I'm quite impressed with it, I would have to say that it just took the front position in the safe away from the SL8. It fits me very good, shoots good, and no operating errors or malfunctions since the first 2. (That were probably my fault). The craftsmanship of this rifle is damn good, barley any visible machining marks, and the finish is beautiful. I would have to say, it's feels rugged like a rock, unlike some stamped out, and poly guns. Now let the tacticool shopping begin..
I will update with optics later.
