>If it was me, the FIRST thing I would want is night sights.

Ok, guys, explain to me the fascination with night sights?

I'm thinking back to my first CF pistols. I just got (or am in the process of getting) my CZ-75. I'm excited, I'll be playing with it whenever the registration process comes through... My GF/wife wants to buy me a present to help me enchance the experience... So... she gets me... night sights? Ok, what am I going to be able to with night sights that I couldn't do before?

Shoot at night? Uhhh.... Unless I live in Toronto's Jane and Finch and have a night time delivery route, I don't think that's likely to be overly useful.

I don't think you have the right frame of mind, don't think what you would like as a present for yourself now, think about someone brand new, just getting into this. What cares about night sights? I have NS on my Glock, and beyond running around in my dark basement for maybe 15-20min to see how cool they glow, I never used/noticed them since then. How is a brand new shooter, just getting his first gun, going to really take full advantage of his night sights, to warrant his GF spending what little money she can allocate for this?

It's a little more expensive than $50 you have in mind, but seriously - that Dropped-and-offset holster is a perfect gift. He'll have his gun, this will let him play with holster stuff at home, and hopefully will wet his appetite for getting into action shooting of some kind (ipsc, idpa, etc). But you do have to wait until he decides on a gun - honestly, there is little you can get that's generic and costs around $50 (electrinic ear muffs might do, but those are much more expensive).
If you absolutely cannot afford the price for the Bladetech, Fobus or Uncle Mike's plastic holsters are ok, they are cheaper and not as nice, but still cool for a first time pistol over to play with (I've ordered from these guys: http://www.gunaccessories.com/Fobus/Standard.asp - usd$30 for Fobus for the XD .40; their uncle mike's XD line seems to be only for 4" and compact, I"m guessing in Canada we only get the 5" barrel models). You can order Bladetech DOH directly from them, and if you phone in the order they'll ship it via regular USPS, not via a courier (so you won't get zinged for stupid brokerage fees which will cost you more than the holster itself; the website itself doesn't give you that option).

Beltfed: I wouldn't bother with a gift certificate from our ONE gun shop. They are crazy overpriced from what he tells me.

How about a gift certificate from one of the venders on here? The point is, everyone that has replyed to this post has varying ideas on what to get. Alot of good ideas, and I doubt your boyfriend would be unsatisfied with any of them, but with a gift certificate he can get exactly what he wants. If he is like me, he generally hates shopping, but gun stuff is different, and the decision of what to get is part of the fun of the gift.:D

With regard to night sights, I've had an XD for a few years now and have not felt the need to replace the stock sights enough to spend ~$170 to do it.
I use it for IDPA & IPSC as well as general target & plinking.
I have meps on 3 other handguns, and while they are great sights, it isn't something I'd replace right away.

Good luck with the Gift!!
Big +2 on the 'well done you'
