hello all

handled an m&p 40 today at the local gun shop, thought it was the most natural pointing pistol i've handled to date. unfortunately i have not had the chance to handle an xd, can someone please give me a head to head comparison on these two pistol, pointing out the pros and cons of each.

i'm going to be getting one of these two in a .45

thanks

Shot 'em both, like em both. I have two xd's, one in 9 and one in .45. If the M&P had been out sooner, I might have the 9 in it instead. Go with whichever suits you best.

I currently own an XD40 but, do plan to get a M&P 9 in the next year or so. My XD has been excellent... I would recomend one with confidence.

Buy 1911 clon and you will never look at plastic handguns :)

I bought a higher end 1911 and had about 20 FTEs on my very first night of shooting it. It was a fussy gun and it took a while to sort out exactly what the hell was happening...

Needless to say it left a sour taste in my mouth for 1911 performance. I love the design and I wanna buy another one, but when it came to reliability my XD9 absolutely blows it out of the water.

I don't own XD nor M&P (I have a Steyr), but between the two I'd take the M&P; XD is larger 5in (vs 4.25 M&P) and I don't like the XD's egros...

I have shot both an XD and an M&P quite a bit and in the end I bought an M&P. Both guns have great ergonomics, at least for my hands and both shoot reliably and reasonably accurately. For me it came down to the availability of parts and service. Springfield WON'T supply dealers with spare parts, so if your gun breaks, your dealer has to contact Springfield, give them the serial number of your gun, order the replacement parts and then wait for them to arrive.... The chances of something happening to your XD are pretty slim, but I didn't like the prospect of sitting without my gun for a month or 2 waiting for parts... Which is too bad because I really do like the XD's. It's nice to see that they are gaining in popularity. I hope Springfield changes their mind about parts in the future.

already have one, felt the m&p 40 seriously outclassed it for pointability at least

i'm leaning towards the m&p the more i think about it.

Wait a couple months until the M&P 45 lands - nice, purpose built 10 rd magazine (no pins in those ones).

Why have a pinned 10 rd 9 or 40 when you can have a 10 rd 45?

Agreed, the M&P .45 ACP will be a very nice gun for sure. I'l be getting one as soon as they get here. But, if you shoot regularly, .45 gets pretty expensive. It's nice to have a 9 mm for everyday shooting.

I dont like how they feild strip, and the ones I have seen have tight chambers and jamb with reloads.... wich is silly for a duty pistol.

Which? xd or m&p? I haven't taken the smith down myself, but stripping the xd is the work of seconds, easy and fumble free, much simpler then stripping a 1911 or a HP. As for jamming on reloads, I've never owned a gun that wouldn't choke on poor reloads. All mine eat is reloads and they run great if I do my job. I do find the XD in 45 likes 200grn swc's seated further out then my 1911 does, but if I seat them where it likes it feeds them tickety boo, and you can't make it jam with anything round nose or truncuated......The 9 just feeds anything at all.....
