I have a 1885 XL Shotgun marked 44. Cal and is a drop block lever action.Wonder where I can purchase ammo or what might work.I know it is very close to a .410.Thanks for all replys Samson
 
I have since tried load 44 Magnum and it falls right into place and allows the block to close and even ejects loads.I must take a chance to fire ,will this be good or bad?.Samson ps I just ran a dozen rounds of 44.Remington Magnums and it works great other than the sore sholder.

It is marked on the top of the barrell XL Shot-gun 44 Cal. (Antique status as produced in 1885).When a 44 mag. round is loaded into the tube with no problem and also the locking block to come closed and rdy for fire.The fired brass at the barrell end measure 2/1000 th of a difference.Cycles the empty clear for a no problem quick fire.
 
If you're firing 44 mags through that thing, you're risking life and limb. If the cases fit and eject, fine - use the cases to load up black powder shot shells for it (444 might also work). You're not going to find off the shelf ammo that's safe to use in a gun that age and caliber.

I believe the 44mag came out long after 1885. just cause something fits in a gun, doesn't mean your ok to fire it. Didn't you take the PAL course?
 
Lonewolf.Have you never experimented with anything.I have put a box of 44 Remington 270 grain and it cycles and discharges great.All under controled conditions of coarse.

Must be really hard manually cycling rounds if his shoulder hurts

No worries though, I often misread posts more times then I can count.
 
Firing factory .44 Magnum loads in that sort of firearm is foolish.
The cartridge for which the gun is chambered is akin to a black powder 2" .410.
