Hi,
Model: Savage 10fcp-sr heavy fluted 24" 10shot detachable mag.
Optic: Bushnell Elite Tactical 6x24-50 (previous generation.)

This is my first precision rifle I started almost a year ago.
I now know what I really like and dislike about this rifle everybody knows savage they make great products so I'll simply focus on my problems and solution I think would work best.

Comfort: the grip when shooting prone seems like I would be more comfortable with a pistol grip as my trigger finger and thumb are often the only thing touching the rifle kind of a more natural position for me I guess. Also for coyote hunting when I'm sitting next to a tree I think it would be easier to aim with a pistol grip.

Weight: Not that bad my rifle is 11lbs with the glass on it. Still (for me) too heavy to hold and fire standing up I must hold onto something to aim. I dont plan on having a hunting rifle but I like to go hiking for a couple of days and shoot in mountains with it so weight is important if I can save 1-2 lbs I'll take it.

Precision: Enough for me and considering it's a factory rifle but if there are ways to improve why not!
Bellow are 5shots @100m I did not let much time for the barrel to cool but that's the average I shoot.

Solution: I looked at the Mc Millan stocks but needs too much fitting and adds a lot of weight although the ergonomics seems good. any weight savings with their A3 Sporter?
I am considering a chassis system like the XLR element or the XLR Carbon, not the prettiest one but I spoke to their salesman and it is the slimmest one so ideal to fit in my backpack for hiking but 4oz heavier than their carbon chassis. With the default of being slightly heavier I wouldn't need to rise the height of my scope because of the forehand adding more volume to carry in my system. Also it is a bit less expensive so that's always nice.

Concerns/Questions:
-Does anyone know the weight of the standard savage accustock? I would like to know if there will be any weight savings by going to a chassis system.
-Did anyone noticed precision improvements by going with a chassis made by XLR?
-Does anyone provide those in Canada?

Thanks in advance.
Thomas

Me and another guy run the XLR Carbon chassis, check this thread out:

I don't recall the weight of the standard Savage Accustock (that came with my 10TR) as I sold it not long after I got my chassis. I can tell you the chassis is heavier that my Accustock, so I don't think you will experience any weight savings going with the chassis system.

I did a Mickey Mouse range report on the rifle before the XLR Carbon, but never went back to get rounds on paper after that so no clinical assessment on whether or not the chassis improved accuracy or not. I've only shot steel and I was able to make hits out to 1km, so I'm guessing it didn't hurt accuracy?

Three round group at 1,050m:

Me and a buddy ordered ours direct from XLR Industries last year and they shipped direct to Canada, but I've heard recently that they don't anymore.

My set up:

Solid platform, and relatively inexpensive at the time, before our dollar tanked. My only complaints are I'm not a huge fan of the folding mechanism, and it would be nice if the stock had tool-less adjustability. Other than that, the action sits tightly in the chassis as if they were machined from the same chunk of material. Since there is so much clearance between the barrel and the hand guard, I would imagine it is completely free floated, and there is no chance of flexing tot he point where it would contact the barrel. Upgrade to AI mags is another plus because I heard the cost of those Dark Eagle mags or whatever is over the top.

I have one on my savage based custom. Nice rig but expensive with the current exchange rate. Have a look at MDT. Lots of savage guys running them.

Yeah, the exchange rate blows right now. I ordered the folder option and two mags, so total was $1205USD but when I got it, the rate wasn't horrible. With today's exchange rate, it would work out to $1609 before tax and shipping. If I had to spend that much today, I'd get another Cadex Dual Strike.

Mister Donut, is that the 20 or 24? I like the proportions :)

That is the 24in barrel. When SFRC had the 20in TRs on sale for $660 delivered, I was tempted to pick one up and leave it in the Acccustock. Figured if I started hunting one day, I'd want a lighter rifle to lug around the bush, and I know the 10TR shoots like a laser :)

With the exchange rate I will wait for sure and probably just modify the grip on mine to be more comfortable if there is no weight gains.

Really nice setup!
Do you know the weight (approx) of the rifle now?

With the exchange rate I will wait for sure and probably just modify the grip on mine to be more comfortable if there is no weight gains.

The thing is a pig, lol! But so is my 700 in the Cadex chassis. I don't know exactly how much it weighs wet or dry, so I'll try to weigh it tonight after work if I remember :)

Have a look at the Boyds family of stocks... lots of options, light and well priced. An order of magnitude cheaper then the McMillan.

MDT has some nice chassis with the LSS likely your lightest and most packable option.

Mcmillan does inlet for the Savage so there isn't much fitting.... just bed and go play.
