didn't the receiver melt during the testing done by the U.S. Military @.@? Looks like a Funky G36, but then again it is made by HK ^.^b

After firing over 4 straight 100 round dual drum C-mags one after another, on fully automatic(correction it was over 5/100 round C-Mags), any other rifle would have a catastrophic failure! Basically meaning this rifle was the one that got away, the US should have bought it. The only reason i could say that would prevent it from being purchased was the fact of the possibility of moving to another round, which I don't see the reason we will, or couldn't change on the XM8 anyways.

there has been many false reason floating around the web that are myths about this rifles, so there was really no good reason to say it was not cracked up to what everyone thought it was. The XM8 in my opinion was truly a 21st century rifle.

Well the way I remember it is that while the XM8 was a slightly superior system to those currently fielded. It was not superior enough to warrant a complete re-armament.

This of course is the great debate...

I think they should replace the M16/M4 system as a stop gap until a caseless weapon can be fielded. Others think that it's not worth the money.

G36 = 24000 rounds without cleaning or lubing. No-one can make that standard.

The XM8 was a POS. Integrated optic? Proprietary accessory system? Proprietary mags? It was a rifle of the 1990s.

this is from Wikipdia:

The XM8 is a developmental U.S. military designation and project name for a lightweight assault rifle system that was under development by the United States Army from the late 1990s to early 2000s. The Army worked with the small arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch (H&K) to develop the system to its requirements in the aftermath of the OICW contract, for which H&K had been a subcontractor to ATK. Although there were high hopes that the XM8 would become the Army's new standard infantry rifle, the project was put on hold in April 2005, and was formally cancelled on October 31, 2005.

I don't think this one will melt after just 5 Beta mags! Oh, wait, Betamags are for mouse guns only and this one fires only serious ammo... Well, I don't think it would melt anyways! :dancingbanana:

XM8 = G36 with happy paint.

It suffered from all the issues the G36 does and offered little real benefit over the M16FOW aside from the piston and clean action. If only they had used an M16 type charging handle on the G36 it would likely be the gun to beat. Something like the ACR would be ideal. My opinion only.

there are many who would not agree with the use of the T charging handle. It's so far back in the rifle itself... it can be quite difficult to use without unshouldering the rifle itself...

Wait that sounds like the excuses people use for hating bullpup magazine location. Oh the irony.

G36 Mags are better than AR mags.

Now that the PMags and other good AR mags are out there it would be very easy to adapt a mag well on a G36 or XM8 to accept them.
You can put any sight rail you want onto the XM8 or G36. Knight's makes a great 1913 rail with metal flip-up sights that could be used. Then the US Forces could mount all of their existing sighting options onto the gun.

As much mis-information that there is about the famed "Dust Tests" the fact of the mater remains that the G36 (XM8) won the test.

I'm still waiting for some fool to tell me that a DI AR / M16 / M4 can replicate the 24000 round, no lube-no cleaning endurance test that was done more than once in the desert.

It's been said by L. James Sullivan (former employee of ArmaLite in the 1950's) that the "US is a superpower only when it fights a Naval Battle or an Air Battle. It's not a superpower when it fights a rifle battle." Our enemies know this.

The issue with the G36 railed options is the offset distance from the bore. The original German G36 w/sight carry handle combo allow use of the optic in the correct position and easy (I stress "easy") operation of the charging handle. When rails are placed on top to mount other optics usually this access is impeded and the optic is still high.

G36 is a fine rifle but the charging handle design although I"m sure at first thought to be a fantastic idea is in practice limiting to the overall system. I think the G36 is a step in the right direction but not a final destination. The cool think with the flat top M16 is that you can effectively mount almost anything you want in any combination. The G36/XM8 cannot do this.

Rifle battles are cool but now days just one small part of a much larger beast.
