Hi guys. Just doing some Boxing Day reloading.

I am playing with 250g and 300g xtp in my 45colt Henry.

I did lots of reading about xtp mag vs xtp.

From what I found the 300g xtp should have 2 canalures the Mag version should have one.

Well I opened a brand new sealed box of regular XTP 300g (p/n 45230)
It only has one cannalure but the HP looks exactly like the 250g xtp.

Wondering if hornady changed their design

Was loading some 45 cal, but the .458" for 45-70 the other day. Don't know if the 45 colt is the same diameter, as it uses the .452" I think, but still labelled as 45 cal.

The Hornady #4500 300 gr XTP has two canalures as you mention. The one to crimp on and one at the very bottom, just up about a heavy 1/16" from the flat base. It is also not as pronounced, and only about 1/2 the width.

Maybe those are the ones that you are reading about the double cannalure?

What I did notice is that the latest batch of XTP 300 grainers I got only had one cannelure band on the bullet and the older version had two, same product number from Hornady. I believe the jacket and core are the same where the Mag version has a thicker jacket

I spitzerized these ones but they illustrate the different cannelure bands.

Maybe it's been done to accomodate cartridges like the .450 Bushmaster that have become more popular? Hornady definitely does change profiles, or has anyway. I got burned buying a few thousand .451 230 XTPs recently. I needed them to load .460 Rowland but I needed the "old" design which I didn't know at the time.

These are the .452” 300g xtp.

Looks like a design change.

Yeah that’s what I thought. Made a change.

That’s ok. I just didn’t want to start a load development with something odd.

OP,
Sacrifice one of each.
clamp one of each in a bench vise & draw file the jacket...the mag version should have a thicker jacket.

The shape of the HP and the amount of pedals is right for it to be a Regular xtp. It was just the one cannalure that was throwing me off.

Once I get my 240g xtp mags here I might do that. Just for reference sake
