I keep hearing different opinions on shells for rabbit with either a 12ga. or a 20ga. Some say hit 'em with #6 - you can't miss and it doesn't take much to stop them. Others say use #2 or BB - more range and penetration. What gives? I want rabbit and not hamburger, but it's easier to miss with the larger shot spread.

I expect some will say they use whatever they have handy ... hey, I can live with that too!

Whatever I have in the gun for birds at the time will kill every rabbit that ever hops across my path. Light loads will stop them -- they can't withstand much of a hit. Hell I used to kill snowshoes as a kid with the crossman .177 CO2 powered python lookalike pellet pistol.

Personally I prefer a .22 long rifle and stalking them.

Yup..

The rabbits (snowshoes) around here are kinda dumb and for the most part they just sit there and look at you. This allows for an easy head shot with a .22.If I was using a shotgun I'd go with #6 or 5 shot.

I'm looking at using a 20ga. this winter. Rabbits around here being a little smarter than ordinary, cuz they don't always want to stand still for a shot or a photo. thanks for the ideas ...

5.4 grains Reddot........45 gr hornady "hornet" ......... .222 Brno

1830fps.........0.85 in/75 yds/3 shots.........small mammal masher load..

hs4570.............yer mileage may vary

I use #5 or #4 whichever our lousy Walmart happens to have in the 100 packs.

12 guage, but I am eyeing a new .20!

Had the dog out Friday past for our first hunt of the season. We only got two, but it was about 20 degrees and the dog was struggling: from the heat and her fat ass.

Looking forward to the next hunt - not sure of the population trend yet.

:D

12 or 20 ga I would use some of the cheapy 2 3/4" 4's or 5's. I like something that goes right through and doesnt end up getting spit out on my plate. Same for grouse.

Jacks get the BB's or better because its usually a little longer range and a bigger critter.

I hunt with a referees whistle on my left hand and a lever action .22 with no scope. If you see them before u see them it's simple...right between the ears...if they're running it's a quick blow on the whistle which gives ya'bout 2-3 seconds to line up the shoot...it's that simple...NEVER ANY MESS IN THE GUTS.

i use to hunt with light loads but i just hated cleaning rabbits with their guts all a mess. plus lining up and making shots only between the ears makes it more of a challenge.
