Yes, another import question....

My deepest apologies for starting YET ANOTHER import thread, but I honestly cannot find the information I'm looking for...I have been trying all sorts of keywords in the search and have not come up with what I need.

Can I import a +500fps air rifle from the US? Has anybody done it here that knows what I would have to do? I can only find information in the searches for less than 500fps airguns...

I know it will need to be registered up here, but if I'm not mistaken, it is not classified as a firearm in the US, and therefore not export controlled, correct?

Does anyone know where I can find that on the ATF website? I tried looking, and after about 100 pages, I started going blind.

Also, if it is allowed, how do I register it with CFC, while it is still in the US? How long can I expect the registration to take? If I call the CFC on a Wednesday, what are the odds of it being able to be brought back up by Friday?

I know, someone is going to say that this has been answered a hundred times, in which case, please politely point me to the thread.

I understand it can be done in the following manner,
Buy the gun
Call the RCMP with the serial number and register it
Wait for your paper work in the mail
If you can go down put a trigger lock on it and declare it at the border, not sure how else to ship it

Many guys have done this without any troubles at all.

I'm hoping to make a trip down for a couple days, and would love to be able to bring it back with me.

If it's allowed to be exported, would the CFC be quick enough, and would a fax of the registration be sufficient?

Anybody know?

Make sure you can legally bring it back into Canada. Anything silenced or shrouded is a no-no. Call and ask to speak to a verifier. Once verified, register the serial number. A fax would be nice for import but you may only need the cert number. Your asking questions on a public forum that could wind you up in jail. Call and ask is the best advice I can give.

I do appreciate the advice, but I don'; think they'll toss me in jail for asking how NOT to break the law.

This is what I'm trying to determine. Does anyone know where to find the information on whether a +500fps air rifle is export controlled in the US? I know I can call the CFC here in Canada and find out the answers to the other questions if required, but I'm having a hard time negotiating the legal mumbo-jumbo on the ATF website to find out if I can even get it to the border legally.

FWIW, the air rifles I'm looking at are just run-of-the-mill air rifles, no replicas, suppressors, breaks, or anything that could remotely be construed as prohibited in Canada. It's just that I am looking into the +500fps category, which unfortunatley, makes it a "firearm" in Canada.

U.S. and airguns

airguns in the US are not controlled in any manner period

Just a heads up and for everyones info. I am attaching part of a discussion on this topic from the rimfirecentral.com webiste.
If you do some further research, you may be surprised to find a host of other airgun laws in place in other U.S states.

Fortuna

here is the info from the rimfirecentral.com discussion board;

Very interesting. I did not know the US had airgun regulations for power.

Actually, Illinois doesn't prohibit pellet guns larger than .177 or 700fps, they just are treated as "firearms" and you need a FOID card.

From the Illinois State Police (ISO) website. (Italics and underlining added)

Quote:
"Firearm" means any device, by whatever name known, which is designed to expel a projectile or projectiles by the action of an explosion, expansion of gas or escape of gas; excluding however:
(1) any pneumatic gun, spring gun, paint ball gun or B-B gun which either expels a single globular projectile not exceeding .18 inch in diameter and which has a maximum muzzle velocity of less than 700 feet per second or breakable paint balls containing washable marking colors;
(2) any device used exclusively for signalling or safety and required or recommended by the United States Coast Guard or the Interstate Commerce Commission;
(3) any device used exclusively for the firing of stud cartridges, explosive rivets or similar industrial ammunition; and
(4) an antique firearm (other than a machine-gun) which, although designed as a weapon, the Department of State Police finds by reason of the date of its manufacture, value, design, and other characteristics is primarily a collector's item and is not likely to be used as a weapon.

This is why most airgun dealers will not ship to the state. The legislation is so ambiguous as to be unintelligible. Let's not even discuss the enforcement.

And even is it is smaller than .18 and slower than 700fps, you cannot allow an under 13 year old to use it except under specified conditions.

This is one screwed up state.

contact airgunexporter in California (just google it), they know the US side of things and how to get it to Canada. But, beware of Canada Customs: even a below 500fps, non-replica airrifle using the Daisy 853 action was held for 6 weeks before being released to Canada Post.

Have you looked to see if the gun you want is available in Canada? Even if it costs a few bucks more, might be worth it to avoid the hassle. I have purchased from airgunsource several times, they have great pricing, and stock tons of 500fps+ guns.
