Hi all,

This is a question for all shotgun reloader.
I want to reload sabot slug but I would like to use more common bullet than those molded from lee or lyman mould.

So, my question is, is it possible to load a 12 gauge with a .308 bullet with a plastic wad ? (is there a company that sell those wad ?)
The goal of this question is to find a way to reload better sabot slug with a common, easily to find, bullet.

I searched the net and this forum and all I see are specially made bullet for sabot slug that are not even conical. When we look at high performance sabot slug from remington or winchester, they actually look like a cal 45 bullet (.45-70).
They can get a 300grain bullet at 2000fps.

a box of 5 = 20$ +tx

Depending on the weight and length of the .30 cal. bullet, you would have to match a specific rate of twist, similar to rifles, so prolly 1-10" or 1-12", or faster if the bullet is longer. Otherwise bullet would travel "end over end" or sideways, be very inaccurate, shed velocity quickly. Even if you got this together a .30 cal. bullet at say 2200fps will not kill as well as a good/properly reloaded, 12 gauge slug.

What about using muzzle loader bullets...... .45 or .50 cal?

A buddy of mine thought about doing this for his 28 gauge shotgun and .50 cal Hornardy bullet for a muzzle loader.......the bullet fits perfectly in a 28 gauge shot cup.

He never did do it, was more a musing of his!

Short answer no, those bullets you see in the sabot are 50 Caliber handgun bullets or FTX type bullets. The wads are technologies that the companys dont want you to have so you are stuck buying them factory loaded.

so, its looks like a lot of people tought of that before me, so how come i dont see anything about trying it ? (still muzzeloader bullet in cal 50 are cheap compared to the cost of factory sabot slug)

I reload slugs all the time you just use standard trap and skeet wads and special size slugs...

Reason no one does it is the same reason alot of hunters just by factory ammo they dont shoot more then a few boxes.

Second reason is the sabots are not avalible... I was working with the company who makes them but they arnt really intersted in your money... they have one distributor who "can get them" but doesn't stock any.

I was trying to order in 2000 for hunting season which starts in about 3 weeks but they arnt interested doing the paperwork or dealing with me.

They are also quite expensive 17 dollars american for only 50 pcs.
