w:h:: Finally hit the 'buy it now' button and bought myself a scout...Steyr Scout that is :D. Should be in the mail later today I hope

In the meantime I'm looking for some advise on how best to mount the scope that has been sitting on my bench for a couple of months in anticipation of finding a 'scout'...Its a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20 Matte 30mm with the illuminated duplex reticule, that will obviously be mounted in the 'conventional' location, as opposed to the forward 'scout' location.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with a similar installation? Suggestions, recommendations for rings?

Also I guess the 'Ching Sling' style of rifle sling is 'apropos' this rifle...but I have never used one, is it worth buying one and getting to know how to use it? I have used slings as 'support aides' in the past, but never used a '3 point' style sling...

Any other suggestions, such as factory loads for accuracy, etc?

Thanks,
Jim

You are gone love that rifle, i own 2 308 Scout, one with a 2.5 X scope in the scout position and one with a regular position scope, also i have a Scout Steyr 376, i don't shoot that one much, it is a real kicker a little bit to much to my liking....You made a good buy... JP.

Which scope position do you prefer? I know it goes against Mr. Cooper's philosophy of the 'ideal Scout gun' having a variable scope mounted in the rear position...but it is a pretty nice scope!

Maybe I'll pick up a 'scout scope' and give it a try some day. Leupold or Burris?

WOW ... 3 Steyrs. Got any pics?

.

The regular position is my favorite as on the scout position it is hard tho have a good sight past 200 metres, but if i know i will hunt thick brush i will use Cooper set up as i can leave both eyes open a bit like a red dot... JP.

Thanks JP...so now, the gun is on its way, the scope is sitting on my bench, time to decide which rings to go with.

With the 20mm objective I'm pretty sure the 'low' version of any rings will be fine, but who makes decent 30mm rings for the 'weaver style' rail mounts on the Steyr?

Any suggestions? Burris Signature Zee, Leupold, I have no idea where to start...and the nearest gun shop is almost an hour away :-(.

Anyone using a 'Ching Sling', opinions?

Jim
