Well after reading all of your posts for a few years now I finally took the plunge and started builting a rig..... Here it goes......

Bought a Stevens 200 (damn you mysticplayer:) ) chambered in .243 win as I really like my savages, and it was what I could afford (309.00$ SiR) I chose .243 win as my caliber because as it sits right now I'm about to start school for machining so moneys tight and wanted to pick a caliber that would be good at the range, for varmints, and still use for deer. That and my buddy has all the dies and reloading equip for it. Topped it with a Nikon Prostaff 3x9-40 scope and I must say, nicest scope I've ever had but thats not hard seeing as my last 2 scopes were from Kalinka  .

First thing I did was removed the butt pad and filled the rear stock with expanding foam to replace the foam block that was in it. Replaced the buttpad with a Limbsaver. Then I filled the front recessess with fibreglass resin and sunk in 2 two oz. pieces of steel to add some weight to the front end of the stock. Used a glass bedding kit to bed the action (first for me), and finished it off with a nice camo paint job compliments of CanadianTire and the folks at Krylon (turned out really nice I'm told).

First day at the range..... Well I bought 4 boxes of shells, 2 boxes of 100gr. federal cheaps to brake in the barrel and a box of 70gr. hornady, and a box of remington 70gr. accutips. Did a rough sighting in at 25m with the 100gr. and was pulling off very small groups but not that hard at 25m. After the 40 rounds of federal I cleaned the barrel and moved out to 100m and started with the remington accutip. Was having a really hard time bringing in consistant size groups (5 shot) and was starting to get a little worried. Finally moved to the hornady and it brought the groups right it. The rifle started giving me just over MOA groups but I think I could have gotten better as I was starting to get a little tired and starting to pull my shots. Going back to work for the next month but hoping to head out once I'm back and start moving out to the farther ranges and see what I can do.

I would appreciate any advice or tip anyone might have for me to try and improve on the set-up of my rig because as I said, I'm new at this. Thanks.

How is the trigger? I find that I can get better and more consistent groups if I have a nice crisp trigger break. I like my 'hunting' rifles to be about 3#'s and I only have one 'target' rifle and it breaks ~ 1.75#'s.
Mystic would know about cleaning up the stock trigger assembly or about replacement options.
I don't know anything about your scope, but 9 power should be enough. Rings and bases?
What is your shooting experience? Maybe you need more practice?

Come on now, does Rosie O'Donell blame spoons for her weight problem:p
Right now your addiction is just starting. It won't take long and you will be auctioning off a kidney on EBay to support your growing addiction.
Start thinking about getting into reloading, match bullets will shoot way better than any hunting ammo. And stop cleaning your rifle so much. Don't clean it until the groups open up.

I am glad that I could bring you so much misery :)

Lighten that trigger - small nut type screw on the trigger group (wire spring going through it). Turn it out until the sear will not engage when you close the bolt. Go back two clicks and try closing the bolt hard. It should hold. That is pretty much as light as the factory will go. You can polish the engagement surfaces to help a bit.

Should be around 3lbs when done.

Keep an eye on barrel heat. Groups will really open up. Try for 3rds groups allowing time to cool.

Reloading will help you the most to extract the rifles potential. I would suggest the 87gr Vmax, 95gr SST and similar weighted Sierra matchkings. 90gr Lapua and Bergers also shoot very well.

There is still much to learn but you are certainly off to a great start. Keep an eye on your rests too. You want a stable consistent platform to fire from.

Good luck.

Pics will be forth coming, was on the girlfriend's computer. I tried lightening the trigger some but want to do it gradually as I've been shooting my enfields for years and don't want to start it to light. Was shooting off a stand but want to look into getting a better one and will start reloading for the range once I've got a bit of brass. I'm not a compulsive cleaner, I know my Savage .17hmr soots better a little dirty but just wanted a clean barrel to do the fine sighting after the 40 rounds break-in. Hey Mystic, got any good sites for aftermarket parts? Been looking at sharpshooter supply at a few things but will probably upgrade the stock and barrel next.
