Hi!

I read a lot about the various sks and what they are capable of, and I don't want to start another chinese vs russian thread, as reading and discussing with other people at the range,I came to the conclusion both are about the same as shooters. My question is for the members here that have many sks and who shoot them: are there any remarkable characteristics on your best shooters?

This question might seem stupid, but it becomes confusing, some say an unissued will shoot 6 moa, another 4, 2...and then you have the various conditions of used, that can shoot very well to badly... Now some things are evident, like the crown and bore conditions, but are there any other things that are special about your best shooters, used or un issued?

I have 5 sks. I have only fired 2 of them, a well used 56 russian and a chinese unissued(used now) military probably manufactured in the 70's. The chinese have tighter stock than the russian but i usually shoot better with the russian. And i have shot the chinese more. Russian average 3-3.5 inch 100 yds on bench and the chinese about 4 inch. Chinese have pinned barrel and russian have threaded one. I cannot explain why my russian is better with any type of ammos, rifles are like peoples, different personnality. I wait to shoot 1 of my russian 1949 with non-chrome bore and very very tight stock to see what happen:)
 
Out of all my rifles my Norinco sks d shoots the best.
It outshot my:
1.)1953 Garand
2.)1916 1 *3 Enfield
3.)1941 svt 40
the only gun that has outshot it is my newly aquired
1942 mosin sniper which shot a 1 inch group with
iron sights.

That's interesting. I'm debating whether or not to get back in the SKS game. I kind of had my mind made up that if I get one, it would be Russki, but now, not so sure. What do others say?
 
Its a free country, so I'll chime in: Russian all the way! The original, the best built, and accurate. As with all semi's, you need to practice quite a bit to perfect shooting them.

Here's one of my two best SKS "shooters": 1952 Tula *mild* refurb -- dressed in a Tapco stock -- I find the Tapco stock to be well made and most importantly, adjustable and comfortable. For those gasping and muttering "bubba"... this SKS can be brought back to its original form (not that I will likely ever do that). The original stock, gas tube, magazine and cleaning rod are stored away for safe keeping.

31 of 35 shots hit the target.

The first 5 and last 10 shots were from Czech surplus ammo. 14 of the 15 hit the target.

The "middle" 20 shots were from Prvi Partizan SP ammo. 17 of the 20 hit the target.

(I made a sight adjustment, thus the reason for the scattering of lower shots)

The target was set 200 yards away :) Do you see a scope anywhere?

'Nuff said ;)

ps. 7 trips to the target at 400 yards per trip equals 2.5 kilometres!! ... who says shooting isn't an athletic sport?

Lol Kurgan "Russian all the way" either way you go you can't go wrong with a sks,Russian or Chicom.I bought a unissued 60's Chicom sks all matching ,covered in cosmo
for $165 from frontier,add another $180 for a case of 1200 rounds and you have a whole lotta fun for under $400.00.Now your only chance for a unissued Chicom is marstar for $189.00 whenever they come in,or check out the ee.and as you can see from Kurgan's picture you can dress them up real nice!
 
My 54 Izzy shoots a tiny fraction better than my 55/56 Tula. Either can more than get the job they were designed for done easily.
 
mmm thanks for the answers. However, I was more hoping for charachteristics like tighter fit of the bolt, pinned/threaded barrel, crown condition or other things you noticed on your best shooters rather than starting another russian vs chinese or norc vs military discussion. Basically what do you want to look for when picking a shooter in a bunch of sks. Thanks!
 
Today's SKS's usually come packed in cosmoline and have minimal wear if any, so issues like how tight the bolt is are minor. If you are shopping for a well used 'shooter' grade rifle, it's a crap shoot and you are better off buying a decent rifle that is like new, rather than someone else's beat up truck gun.

My Yugo is highly accurate and the grenade launcher helps the steadiness, even if it makes for a longer barrel, making it a bit heavier in the front. My Norinco looks great, but just doesn't shoot as tight of groups. So I think it depends on the luck of the draw. Some rifles shoot great out of the box and some do not. This is the same for modern rifles and handguns (and cars). Sometimes you get a lemon.

I would agree that Russians are the best and Albanians are said to be highly accurate too, but I have yet to try them. Yugos are built like tanks.

If you get one that shoots tight groups, hold onto it and buy lots of that ammo that it likes.
 
I'd look for a shiny bolt, any bayo but black, and just a generally "clean" rifle with as few refurb marks as possible. After you look through a few you can spot the nicest ones in the litter pretty easily.
