Your Browning BAR accuracy

Hey BAR owners,

Just curious what kind of accuracy you get out of your BAR?

The best I've done so far is 1.5" @ 100 yards.

I'm coming from the precision side of things where this would be a total fail that would send me back to scratch. But I'm starting to get the feeling this maybe in the acceptable zone.

Just wondering if I should try a different bullet or be happy as is.

The gun is a 1969 Browning BAR in .338 win mag.

The load is 225 TSX behind 67.5grains of IMR4350 at 2700fps.

This will be a moose gun.

With a solid rest I get the same 1.5" @ 100 yds, 5 shot group, .243 100gr factory ammo.

For 99% of hunting situations I find the gun is plenty accurate.

I have a 7mm WSM BAR Shorttrac Camo Stalker, 300 WSM BAR Shorttrac Stalker.

My father has a 300 WM BAR Safari.

I have had and sold 2 - 308 win both 1969's and a 7mm WSM BAR ShortTrac with wood stock.

The 2 - 308's where just around the 1" - 3 shot groups at 100yds maybe average would be a touch bigger.

All the rest shoot under a 1" for 3 - shot groups.

I have a 3006 which was made in the late 60's or early 70's. It will keep 3 shots under 1.5" at 100 yds consistantly. That level of accuracy should allow you to hit the kill zone on a moose out there a long ways. In theory (at least) that's a 6" group at 400 yds.

I've got the same BAR as you, .338 win mag, Browning Belgium.

1.5" is kind of my Go/No Go threshold for serious hunting rifles.

I've just gotten my BAR this spring and my first load is 225gr Hornady SST's at 2825 fps (I'm pretty sure...velocity may be a tad more, don't have my notes with me.). They shoot a tad under 1.5". Most hunters, myself included, consider honest 1.5" groups perfectly fine for hunting.

When I'm reloading for hunting, as long as my rifle keeps on shooting 1.5" or less, I keep adding more powder until I get either pressure signs, or bigger groups.

Unless you are trying to turn your BAR into a long range hunter (500+ yards), you're fine as you are I think.

you'll find you get better accracy with 250-275's than anything else- or at least that's what i've found with my 91 issue- 70 grains of imr7828, and either 250 sgks, or when you could get them speer semi spitzers in 275 grain-certain calibers are DESIGNED to burn certain weights- in the 308, it's 150 or 180- in the o6, you'll find the 180 shoots better than the 150, and the 200-220 shoots best in the 300 mag- with the 338, it was designed for 250s right at the outset, and if you have a 1/10 barrel, you can run 300s- just like if you run a 110 grain in a 308, if you run a 220 in a 338, accuracy SUFFERS- sure, you get more velocity, and less recoil, but if you want to run that bullet weight, you should be running a 300 mag- that's what that was designed for-

I also noticed that 250 grain gamekings shot very well for years in my Win model 70 in 338 win mag, with normal groups about 3/4". And they liked to be pushed pretty hard too. I have not tried them in my BAR.

I've shot a few BARS.

They would all hit a loonie @ 100 yards with 3 shots. Never tried that big of one though.
