Your coyote rifle?!

I'm planning to buy a coyote rifle in .223

What is your model, I'd like some suggestions.

Right now it is a 760 pump in 223 which is too rare to be taking out for coyotes so like you I am in the market for a new 223. Tried the savage axis route which may be fine but not for me. Had a tikka T3 a few years back and loved it.
Also thinking about a savage model 12 or 10 or a 7615 rem.

I have two supurb rifles.

1) Remington Varmint SPS in 223. I replaced the tupperware stock with a Hogue and ensured the barrel was free floating. At Benchrest in perfect conditions (no wind, 15 C) I smoked a target with 50 gr vmax moly's (748 and mag primer) to about a 1/4". Two shots were almost same hole.

2) Savage Predator Max 1 in 243. Again, it is a superb rifle shooting 70 gr noslers (H335) to 1/2" MOA. Not quite as tight as the Remington out of the box, but shoots more for the long distance. This is my goto.

Aahh. A favorite topic!
In the 70's, when pelts were at a premium, I paid for a university education hunting coyotes. Being a budding gun nut back then, I finally settled on a Rem 788 in 22-250 with a Weaver 10X scope. I cannot remember if it was 52 or 53 grain Sierra's that would enter the coyote and usually not come out. Why i traded that rifle off, I will never know. I then moved on to a 6mm Model 77 that I never really liked.

With today's bullets (V-max, Ballistic Tip, etc), a light for caliber high velocity will work great. Especially if you dont care about pelt damage for the occasional through and through.

Back then, I tried a 222 and with any shot that was a little back (running coyotes seem to make for off placements), it didn't always do the trick.

Today, my first choice is an HB Rem 700 6MM with a 6.5-20x VX3 but that is just because I like the gun. Having shot coyotes with everything from 22 LR to 338 Win Mag, anything will work.

Part of the fun of being a gun nut is we each get to customize our rig to fit our exact game, caliber, and hunting areas (long range or calling in the critters).

Good luck with getting the perfect for you coyote gun.

Rem 700 VSF in .204, replaced the plastic stock with a HS precision stock. Heavy gun but I love it!

I've had one of each in a .22 cal, savage 12, rem 700, Tikka T3, I'm on my second Tikka and I'm never letting it go!

My personal recommendations:

Tikka T3 Varmint
Remington 700 SPS Varmint
Or if your into tacticool semis and have lots of disposable income, the Swiss Arms

My fishing/yote/bear/target rifle will soon be a Kimber Montana .223 with a FX3 6X42mm and talleys.

Once I get cash free'd up I'd LOVE a cool little slow twist Model 700 Varmint SF like the .204 up in the thread. With an A-5 stock and a 4.5-14X40 LR scope and 40 grn Vmaxs or Barnes Grenades. Can you say Crow exploder? :D

Used to love a Remington 700 SPS Varmint. Then I tried out a T3 for big game, liked it so much I traded the SPS on a T3 Lite SS. I've always used .22-250 on varmints.

I have a faux TI M700 in 223AI topped with a VXII 3x9. It would be perfect for deer/coyotes, but alas no load work done for it yet.

savage stevens model-200 223rem 55gr v-max
savage model-25 204ruger 40gr v-max
rem 700 sps varmint 22-250rem 50gr v-max
rem 700 sps varmint 243win 65gr v-max & nossler 55gr ballistic tip

All out of the box with no modification's, very accurate, particularly with some handloads.

Everyone is a coyote killer !!

Used to have a Winchester mod 70 in .243, shot like crap, couldn't put 2 rounds within 3" of each other, even after bedding, custom loads etc. Got rid of it for a BLR in 22-250, best move made yet!
