Looking for advice for 1.5-6x scopes. I'm just getting started with my first big game rifle setup for hunting in Ontario. I want to buy something fairly high quality that I won't regret a few years down the road. I'd rather upgrade the rifle than the scope...

S&B at $2K and Steiner at $1500 are pretty steep. I'd like to keep it under $1000 but if you guys think its worth it, I can be talked into waiting and saving for the German glass.

Many thanks!

I have a 1.5-6x42 Victory Diavari Varipoint on my R8. You wouldn't regret one of these if you can find one. Wide and clear. And tough. Very tough.

Big fan of the Trijicon accupower / accupoint 1-4. Thinking of upping it to 1-6, or getting really crazy with a swarovski. But considering I'll probably never take a shot over 100m (where i hunt at least) it seems excessive in terms of price.....but then again I love shiny things!!!

Personally, I think you are on the right track, the quality low range variable is probably the most versatile and useful scope for most big game hunting in Canada and many are used worldwide for everything from antelope to elephant. Leupold probably gives you the most bang for your buck lol, excellent optics, very rugged and reliable with an unbeatable track record dating back decades backed up by their unconditional lifetime guarantee on the top models. Tried most all of the major brands, still have one Zeiss and one Swarovski for their amazing glass, but when the hunt is days or weeks with no possible repair or replacement through all weather conditions and occasional rough knocks I settled on Leupold years ago and have never been let down once, nor have any of my hunting companions. My personal favourites are the Vari X III models in 1.75-6X and 1.5-5X. If 5 or 6 times magnification won't let you place a killing shot you are too far for an ethical shot or you need more range time.

If you decide to go top tier I’ve had or used most of the high end 1x4/6/8 and the Kahles k16i 1-6 is the best in my opinion. For $1k the trijicon 1-4 is solid, I had high expectations for the 1-8 accupower but was dissapointed. The Steiner tx5 isn’t bad either. If your after light weight it will be hard to beat a Leupold.

I really appreciate the feedback. Can you elaborate a bit about your long hunt choice - Do you choose the Leupold over the Zeiss and Swarovski because they aren't as durable or because its more of a headache to get them fixed/replaced? I know Zeiss has a lifetime warranty on their high end scopes as well.

I have a bushnell elite 4200 1.5-6 .... have had
The Leupold and prefer the bushnell.... mind you because of the propriety rings on my abolt 12ga I'm stuck with 1" tube... if I had the choice I would definitely get something with a 30mm tube

On longer hunts that you can drive to and set up a camp such as a moose hunt I don't want to lose hunting time dealing with faulty equipment and my main moose hunting rifles wear a Leupold (2) or a Zeiss (1). No problems, no worries, if it ain't broke don't try to fix it. On fly in or backpacking trips every ounce counts and the Leupold gives me the brightness and resolution, ruggedness and reliabilty without a weight penalty. Under these hunting conditions a failed scope is an aborted hunt, you can't just go out for a replacement. Don't forget, the Leupold warrantee covers your scope unconditionally even if it falls in the river or down a rock slide or your horse rolls on it - whatever. No questions asked, quick turnaround direct from Leupold. $hit happens, usually at the most inconvenient moment, I try to keep things simple and prepare as well as I possibly can so I don't need to worry about equipment.

Mine are well under your budget, but I'll say I think you are on to a good thing with 1.5-6x. My Parker Hale No.4Mk1* Supreme has a B&L Elite 1.5-6x32 and my full stocked No.4Mk2 has a Bushnell Trophy 1.5-6x44 (30mm tube) with my favourite reticle, the German No.4. I have a couple of rifles with 3-9x and 4-12x but I've never had a shooting opportunity with them that I don't think I could have taken with 6x.

My preference is to a quality Leupold. Within your specs, I would vote for the 1.5-5 that has already been mentioned however my favourite for any hunting is the 2.5-8. It is simply an awesome optic that for me, can fill every need, fits on most rifles and gives great light transmission. I’m pretty old fashioned though and could happily hunt with a fixed 2.5 or 6X too in many cases.

I have two of those, one original Balvar and the other one B&L 1.5-6 series Bushnell 4000 made by the same outfit in Japan.
They are much better build, clearer than Leupold's and way more scope for your bottom dollar as well.
I wonder why some people are so blind to the fact that Leupolds being decent scopes owe their reputation to monopoly distributor who skims the cream of off them making the Leupold brand "expensive" that equals in popular belief being very good.
GR8's 2 c worth....
