If you had to pick 1 Pre-1950 (design, not build date) built surplus rifle, which rifle would it be?

I will start with my Eddystone U.S. Model of 1917. It is absolutely my favourite milsurp. It's in a pretty stout cartridge as well.

I wish I had an Eddystone ! But out of all my milsurps, it would be a tie between my SVT40 and my Garand. Both serious pieces of history and dam fun to shoot !

Well that's easy;the M1903 Springfield, the original home of the world standard .30-06. Then a nod to the M1917 Enfield followed by the big prize to the M1 Garand. After that the MkIII Lee-Enfield and it's upgraded spawn, the No4. And let's not forget "Ugly Betty", the Mosin Nagant, especially in it's Finnish versions.

Kudos to the M98 Mauser and an attaboy to our own MkIII Ross for some clever engineering and sunny day shooting, but a big fail on the battlefield:(. Oh yes, the Swede Mausers are very nice, but few were ever fired in anger.

Other than that I have no biases.;)

1894 Krag, followed by M-39 and last Ross Mk III.
Got mausers; 96 & 98 but IMO that dog don't hunt.
Had an SVT but too noisy.
M/N's are cool til you get a Finn and then...not so much so. Finn's are tight.
Krag was a failure as a battle rifle but man is it nice to hunt with.
Just my opinion, not worth arguing about for sure.

Mine has got to be the SMLE, doesn't matter who built it. Especially after trying out a few mad minute competitions, damn thing is so addicting! Love 'em.

For pure accuracy: 1910 Ross

For sheer looks: Kar98k

For utter efficiency: SMLE

As with most military rifles, the earlier the better. My "best" SMLE is a 1907, my "best" Ross is a Trials rifle. The Armaguerra is different: the early ones are all that exist; production seems to have stopped at under 100 total.

I inherited 2 carl gustafs, a 1900 and a 1907, at some point they were sporterized but i always enjoyed the old 6.5x55 swede, i do plan on picking up a mosin and an sks for the true milspec flair

mannlicher M95 in 8X56R, just a classy little rifle. Of course if I could find my old Finn 28/30 I would be happy too.
