Your first deer

What rifle or shotgun?
How old were you?
Do you still have the gun?

Shot my first deer during my first deer hunt with a borrowed 1970 Winchester model 94 in .44 mag

The gun was mine from then to this day although no longer hunt with it

Wilcox, PA early '90s. I was 21 (late bloomer). Winchester Model 88 in 308 Win. I still have it but I've restocked it and it now wears an older Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 in Conetrol rings/mounts.

- Remington 870 12 gauge with Federal foster slugs.
- 13 years old.
- Yes I still have the gun.

The problem with that is that I didn't kill the deer. Sure, I shot it. But it turned out to be a wound that the deer survived. It was a good sized doe, and I think I hit it in a fleshy part of the lower neck. We looked for her for hours, found some dark blood, but otherwise, she was long gone. Never did find her.

The saving grace was that my cousin and my uncle went to that same property the next day to look for it again (my immediate family was gone and headed back up north where we lived) and my cousin shot and killed a different doe on the same property. It was his first deer. This was south eastern Ontario, circa 1999.

Looking to kill my first one this year if I can. Hunting them has been mostly off, and sometimes on, for my entire life. But hopefully I'll have some luck shine on me this year. Either a whitetail (which I could have got back home) or a mulie (something new and cool af). I'm not picky.

Well my first deer was shot close to 50 years ago,I was fourteen at the time.It was shot with my fathers old 94 in 30-30,that was the first time I had ever pulled the trigger on that gun, father handed me the gun, told me point and shoot,a big doe came within range and i did just that. That old mod 94 still sits in my gun safe and hopefully will remain in the family for genertions to come

I didn't get my hunting license till I was 27.... so 1996. Prior to that I spent my free time hunting everything with gills and fins hehe
When I started hunting it was all about mountain sheep. Deer and other animals weren't even really on my radar. After the 2nd season , in late 97 was my workplace accident and there was no hunting for me for a couple years. When I got back into hunting in the early 2000's I started deer and moose hunting because sheep terrain was pretty much off the table though i did do one last hunt in 2005. In total years actually spent hunting it was my 5th season that I got my first big game animals. I think that was 2002 and I shot a young 2 pt blacktail buck at 30 yards with my dads early 1900's BSA lee enfield .303 sporter he bought as a survival rifle when he was working the logging camps in Alberta in his younger years. I still have it in my collection. The same day I killed a 2 or 3 year old black bear while hiking back to camp so it was a good day. Took my biggest mulie to date with that rifle as well, that one was in 2006 I think.... a nice 165.5 scoring 4x4 typical that is mounted on my wall. Bullet of choice has always been the federal powershok 180gr in my enfields.
I hunt the same spot I got my first deer at every season pretty much.... might have missed one or two seasons in the past 20+ years but otherwise I make a point to hunt that spot every year. It's one of my favorite places ;)

first deer was whitetail doe at about 50 meters. Ruger mini 14 with 64 grain winchester power point. sold the rifle and have zero regrets about selling it. grew to hate the inaccuracy and the amount of noise the charging handle made.

My first deer (and big game animal) was a whitetail doe when I was 15 with my grandfather's Marlin 30-30 at 20 yards.
My grandfather left it to an uncle, who has also now passed on. Not sure who in the family has it now.

My first deer was a 1 1/2 yr old whitetail buck. Shot him with a 788 carbine in 308 at about 75yds on the run. I was 18 at the time but had been hunting since I was 12. Foolishly I passed up many nice bucks, since my little group of teenage hunting buddies and I were only interested in shooting Boone & Crocket bucks lol. Dumb. To be fair, I actually had a chance at a legit B&C buck when I was 16 but missed a shot I shouldn't have taken in the first place. Later another local got him and he scored just over 200".

The gun was sold to help fund myself through my first year of Automotive Tech school. I don't regret it. Not a fan of the 788.

My first deer was when I was in my early twenties and my rifle was Remington 700 in the 7mm RM. My brother and I had been hunting for a few years before I got my first deer being a small buck.

First deer was a road kill, back in the mid 70’s when I was 25ish…shared 3 ways after an unsuccessful bow hunting week.
Second deer with an Excalibur crossbow and 3rd deer with a Browning safari grade in 270 Winchester which is still one of my safe queens.

First deer was with a bow. I was in my late thirties. It was a fawn, not my first choice but it was the last day so I took the shot. In the end I was happy because the quality of the meat was excellent (so much more tender than adult).

My first moose was also with the same bow. This is one of my nicest hunting memory ; sunny morning , nice buck coming fast, stop sideways in the clear right in front of me. Nice 65 yard shot perfectly placed (this was far for me).

I stopped bow hunting because the season is too hot now. In the last 10-15 years, end of September is almost like summer. Sitting for hours in a swamp with no mosquito repellent is atrocious. My brother now have the bow.
I hunt moose with a 50cal muzzleloader now (season is in late october) and I leave the deers alone.

Was 16 when I shot first deer with Browning BLR 308win. Watched a 6point marched across open hardwoods straight to me. He hit the ground at 30 yards and my first hour of big game hunting was done.
