I want to know how many times this happens out there. You are asleep under a tree, on a side of a hill in the sun or whatever -- then you wake up and there is some monster buck, turkey, whatever -- it has happned to me enough times to make me wonder if this should be my technique.

I have a friend who is so fidigty on any stand or while waiting for deer or turkeys that i tell him to go to sleep cause thats the only way he isnt moving. Me -when i sit - i hardly breath so its not my movement that changes things.

I wonder if steady breathing draws the animal in ??? I dont know

I was sleeping on a slanted flat rock in the sun and woke up to the 'clop-clop' of hooves on rock. I glance to the side and there's a huge buck walking right by me, so I slowly pull back the hammer on my muzzleloader (across my chest). I'm still watching it out the corner of my eye and when it walks out in front of me, no more than 30-40yards, I sit up a bit and pop him in the neck. Went down like a sack of bricks. Nice quick shot that worked well.

Of course dragging it thru about 2km. of swamp to get back to my truck after that wasn't too fun!:D

But I bet you were nice and rested for the trip. ;)

I sat in the same spot for four days waiting for this guy to come out. It was very warm and before long I dozed off. Something woke me up. Nothing was there but it wasn't a minute after and he popped his head out into our field.

Pics don't do it justice. He grosses 155 and change yet the bleached skull is a full pound heavier than the typical four point at home that just misses the book. Not a monster to some but a monster to me!

Very nice deer Noel. That would have sucked to have slept through that :D

hunting turkeys in west Texas -- no luck for 3 days, sitting in a thorn thicket and fell asleep in the hot sun with full camo on> last day, last hour, awoke to hear a flutter of wings and a big tom walking towards me _ shot him good.

Another time, 4 of us tired out after hunting for moose had lunch out of the back of the truck and fell asleep overlooking a large log cut in north central Alberta. I woke up first and watched a big black stump out about 500 yds or so. My buddies woke up and we were all looking at the stump when the stump started to walk away - well we werent as good a shot back then with our .303s and we tried to get closer and lost the fellow. We still laugh about that one. We argued about if it was stump or a moose for 15 minutes before it walked away. We had no good optics or glasses in those starving student days.

And many more examples...

-----"I don't think there would be any danger of me falling asleep in lion/brownie country."

Three of us set up hunting camp in the mountains in excellent grizzly country, actually on a grizzly path. Early September, breaking daylight, the two in the tent heard something outside the door. They didn't speak, but "knew" it had to be a grizzly. Each measured the distance to his rifle by eye, each wondered of he should make a dive for his rifle, or just keep still.
Then came kind of a peep, peep, and a ptarmigan walked into their tent!
I was soundly sleeping by myself, about fifty yards away, didn't hear a thing, but heard lots at breakfast!

Happened many times, only time I got freaked out was when I was dozing off after lunch, and "felt" something, opened my eyes to see a cougar in the trees above me. That was freaky...:runaway:

I took a break from walking a big slash at noon to eat a sandwich, and sat in the cab of my 4x4. It was warm, and I was a bit tired, so laid my head back and took a nap. When I awoke about 15 minutes later, I noticed a movement in the rear view mirror of the pickup, and there was a nice muley buck, just feeding through the old landing I was parked on. I waited till he disappeared behind the truck, sneaked out my side and popped him at about 25 yards with my 300 Savage. Very unlucky deer! Regards, Eagleye.

Last archery season while chasing cow elk.

It was day #3, and I decided to have a sit by a heavily used fence crossing. It was the heat of the day so I risked a quick nap as typically nothing is moving, right?

Wrong.

I awoke to a whitetail doe and fawn staring at me no LESS that 20 feet away. I am guessing that my snoring grabed their attention. They walked away but stared intently to where I was sitting. After they cleared, I started to get up into a shooting position so that I would be ready in case a similiar oppurtunity presented itself. Sure as hell, a cow elk was very close. Unfortunately, she took a path that lent itself downwind of me and I was busted.

Needless to say, I was wired like a microwave after that!!

I stopped for lunch while hunting for california bighorns. I snuggled in some rocks and had a panoramic wiew of a storm working is way way up the valley.Well I guess I dozed off and when I woke I had a small ram standing just above me looking down. I'm not sure who was more spooked, but did he take off!!

I've never fell asleep and had this happen but one December while taking a Piss I had 6 does walk up on me. I was out in the open on a fence line and everytime I went for my muzzleloader 6 feet away they got spooky. Every time I have to go now I sling my firearm.

On a somewhat related topic my cousin shot his first deer while taking a crap. He actually shot the thing with his pants around his ankles.
