I just started reloading for 22-250 for my Winchester model 70 Coyote. I'm finding my 55gr Hornady SST bullets with 40 grains of H380 are not grouping well. My 30.06 180 gr groups much better out of my XBolt at same 100 meters.

Should I used heavier bullet? Should I slow the velocity? I have yet to buy a chrono. Not sure where to begin, I thought 22 cal should be more accurate than heavier and larger projectile. What brand, weight, and type of bullet? Powder? I have H380, 4895, 4831,and Supreme 780 on hand.

Thanks

There is no such thing as a 55gr sst bullet. I use 36gr of varget over 55gr nosler varmageddon. Shoots one hole at just over 3600 fps.

I shoot the same with a Vmax....................I just couldn't get the nosler to shoot, then I miked them and they where .222 in diameter.....hmmm

I tried the same load with hornady 55gr vmax and shot like crap lol. Never worked on another load. Selling the gun soon anyway lol

Firstly, 22-250's are generally very accurate. Using a Savage Model 12, 1:12 twist, 26" fluted barrel I have had some good results: All of the following shot under 0.50 inches at 100 yards given a 5 shot group:

Hornady 52 gr BTHP
Varget 32.7 gr

Sierra 53 gr MK
H380 37.0 gr

Hornady 60 gr Vmax
RL-15 31.5 gr

Sierra 52 gr MK
Accurate 32.8 gr

Hornady 55 gr Vmax
H380 36.0 gr

Berger 55 gr FB Target
Varget 32.7 gr
H380 36.4 gr
H380 37.8 gr

I seat my bullets 0.010 " off the lands.

These load work in my specific equipment. They may/may not work in yours. Of course, always exercise caution when trying loads that you haven't developed. Make sure they are safe !

I also have a number of loads that shot between 0.50 - 0.75 ". Should you be interested shoot me a PM.

35 Gr. of VARGET over a 50Gr. Hornady V-Max with a match large rifle primer...I prefer Federal, but that's just me.

Coupple of things...

1st) I know Varget is not necessarily the BEST powder for benchrest type accuracy however I use the same load all year round when it's 35 degrees in the summer and -20 in the winter and my loads always perform very consistently.

2nd) I found tailoring the load to your rifles chamber made the most noticeable difference in consistency. ie: Finding your optimal case over all length. Every factory mass produced barrel/chamber will be cut slightly different and they are usually cut long so as to ensure safe compatibility with all factory ammo . I load my V-Max's 0.010" (10 thousands of an inch) off of the rifling. You can do this with a fired casing and a new bullet but I found it easier with the proper tools from Hornady. It's not a complicated procedure nor are the tools very expensive but the payoff is very satisfying.

Good luck and happy shooting.

40.2 grs H-380 and 55gr. V-max in Lapua case with F 210M primers and Lee collet die seems to do the best in my 12 VLP 22-250.

I've loaded for a friend's 22-250 for a few years. I load 52 gr Speer HP (1035) bullets over 36 gr of Varget. He's been happy.

Rem 700 1:14 twist,
Hornady 53 gr match bullets
35 grs varget
CCI large rifle primers
C.O.L 2.330"
My best grouping so far 5/16" @ 100yds

For some reason my rifle doesn't like any bthp
