Your New Service Rifle

Use what you choose.
I even heard of a competitor at NSCC shooting a K98K.

I'm of the mindset that while all of this stuff is still up in the air with court challenges, bills in committee, and looming elections, that it is better to use whatever you've got in the interim (even if it's a K98K ;) ) and then buy the best replacement from the choices available after the dust settles. There are folks rushing to have bolt-action rigs custom built for this with chassis, & muzzle brakes on match barrels and it doesn't seem to be a decision motivated by a fixed-income.

It’s going to be a nice challenge to master my bolt rifle skills in Service Rifle. It’s sad not to be able to shoot my “new prohibs ” but it’s no excuse for me to slack off my skills with what I have at hand. That government cannot break my vigilance to be proficient.

So any matches at Connaught being planned this summer?

Don't know about Connaught or other DND ranges in ON. A few areas of concern - how DND feels about folks gathering and using the facilities and what the policies of the ON Gov't are with respect to gatherings and travel. And for shooters to the east, there could be border crossing restrictions. Who knows? Wait and see.

As far as matches being held by OSA at MilCun, the schedule is on hold, and will not be revised until it is known what is going to be allowed. (www, osacanada.ca).
Matches were scheduled, detailed courses of fire are posted so that shooters can know exactly what to expect, but right now everything is in limbo. OSA/MilCun, being private, might be able to operate even if DND isn't opening its ranges for competitions.

A while back I made up a rather low cost bolt rifle suitable for service type shooting. Salvaged R700 action (belt sanded the wrench marks off the receiver left by someone's attempt to remove the barrel), take-off Savage sporting weight 1-9 .223 barrel adapted to the 700 action, MDT LSS chassis AR butt and grip, low powered variable scope, 10 rd. magazines. Put a brake on to eliminate flip. With 69 SMKs or Hornady 68s, it will hold 1 1/2 moa, which is fine.
There are still n-r semi autos which would work well in competition. I don't know that I would buy invest in one until there is some clarity about what Justin and Bill are going to allow.

I have one but never used it in SR matches. Accuracy is only good out to about 150y. Currently, I don't know of any means of scoping an M1 Carbine. It should be fine for CQB/CQC matches though. Unfortunately, CFB Borden doesn't allow the caliber to be shot, it's not on the approved caliber list. I don't know if other CF bases have the same restrictions.

ok thats bs, i shot mine on borden club days a few times its .30 cal, if you cant shoot that you can't shoot .308, ,30/30... .303 etc.

m1 carbine is easy to scope, i shot mine out to 300m with irons or low power optics

It's true. In the past this wasn't enforced but we were told at 2019 shoots that if it wasn't on the approved caliber list it couldn't be fired. A few guys had to pack up and leave with their soviet bloc rifles as 7.62x54R and 7.62x39 were not approved. Story told was a new base commander was behind it all. It has nothing to do with the power of the round but everything to do with what is on the list and what isn't.

We are having issues with 7.62x51 and 5.56x45 being ok but .308 and .223 are not...….
