Good day to all!

I’ve spent the last month or so doing researches for a scope to go on a Sako Brown Bear in 338 win mag.

I want a scope of good quality for all around big game hunting (mostly moose hunting in Quebec), for an anticipated range of roughly 0 to 300 yards. My main criteria are a very wide field of view for fast target acquisition, a generous eye relief, and excellent light transmission for low light situations.

My first choice would be the Swarovski Z6i 1.7-10x42mm, but the price tag is way over my budget, at around 2900$

Then I found the Leupold VX-6, 2-12x42mm, with very similar characteristics, for a price tag of roughly 1200$.

I’m looking for your comments on this scope. Did anybody have a chance to use one? What are your thoughts on it? Any other scope you would suggest that would meet my requirements?

Looking forward to your comments.

Cheers!

Guillaume

You will not regret the purchase of the Leupold vx-6.

I have one of these on my Tavor and absolutely love it. At 2x you can easily have both eyes open for fast acquisition and with the fire dot on, it feels like you are looking through a red dot sight. The firedot works great on the brightest of days and low light conditions.

At 300 yards, the optic is very clear, and bright and has good eye relief at the 12x setting. I was in awe at how nice this optic is. If it wasn't for budgetary reasons, I would have this optic on every rifle that I own.

The only con of this optic is that you will have a hard time finding a flip cap for the eyepiece as it is an odd ball size. The scope does come with a scope end caps so this isn't really a bid deal.

Best of luck. I'm sure you will be happy with the vx-6.

I'd have a peek through the VX6 first. I've had Leupold's supposed flagship models before (LPS and VX-7) and have been very disappointed in those. I haven't bothered with the VX-6 due to that fact. Once you get into that price range, I try to stick to S&B, Leica, Zeiss and Swarovski. I like VX3's and other Leupold's but have never cared for their scopes which are marketed at competing with the top tier.

Excellent price on a Schmidt & Bender Zenith 3-12x50 Flashdot here, for $600 more it'll embarrass the Leupold:

What I like about the Leupold Firedot reticule scopes is the fact that they are motion activated with an automatic turn off, since I have had numerous problems with manually activated illuminated reticule scopes in the past. I currently have three Leupolds with Firedot reticules with one of them being on my Sako Black Bear in 308.
