Hi i have a Browning A-Bolt Hunter in a 30/06 caliber and it works fine for hunting, but it isn't as accurate as I would like it to be. In my opinion there are better guns out there for the money. My next gun is going to be a Weatherby Vanguard Sub MOA in 300 wby mag. I really liked the T3s' but they don't come in the cal. I wont.
 
I have only own one right now and it is a medium heavy barrel in 25WSSM but it is a sub MOA shooter. I have shot a number of A-bolts and they were all very good rifles that functioned well and shot MOA with little difficulty. They are expensive but they hold their resale value well.
 
Thanks for the input fellas. Based on the mediocre feedback of the Browning, what would you recommend? I currently own a Tikka T3 in a 270 WSM (subMOA right of the box!!) so this will be my benchmark. Price is a consideration since I'm a firm believer that more expensive does not always mean better.
 
I had a browning Abolt II 25-06 that was a sub moa shooter out of the box.
I find the browings a little pricey but I may get another one some day.
I have heard that they arn't the best rifle to customize and if they don't shoot well out of the box then your basically SOL because there is little you can do to them.
I talked to a gunsmith the other day who said that browning had switched to a oddball fine thread on their barrels and can be a ##### to undo without pulling the threads right out of the receiver.

Nothing wrong with either a 30-06 or 7mm rem mag

I disagree - I had an A-bolt stainless stalker in .308 Win that was very accurate. Also had an A-bolt 'hunter' .30-06 that did sub 1" at 100 yards (all stock). And currently still have one A-bolt, a composite stalker in .300 Win Mag that is an honest sub 1" @ 100 yards shooter with my handloads.

'Course I have more Rem 700's than anything else... If I was looking for a new rifle I'd be scouting a Rem 700 SPS stainless or even a little more on one of the new CDL [Classic Deluxe] models.

Wouldn't feel disadvantaged with a Browning but for the same/similar money outlay I'd prefer the Rem 700.
 
I have an A-Bolt Gold Medallion 30-06 quite hqppy with the performance at 100y3 shots in 1.25 165 Nos BTips with reloads 24 inch Barrel.
Just too nice to take hunting however.
I cant even clean it without putting a scratch on her so she sees little use.
But a nice looking stick in the collection.
 
my two bits on browning

I have a .270 composite stalker (a bolt2) and it is very accurate w/ my handloads and feels really nice when shouldered. I love the thumb safety on the brownings, it is in a great position. I don't hink you can go wrong with the browning.:cool:
 
I have used an A-Bolt Hunter in .280 as my primary rifle for 14 years. Sub-MOA 5-shot groups with factory ammo out of the box. I only started handloading because ammo was harder to find than some other chamberings. I've shot 1/2", 3-shot groups with handloads, and 10-shot groups under 2" at 200 yards....and I'm a pretty average shot.
That being said, I'm not nuts about the stock; I find the forearm of my Model 70 Featherweight fits my hand better....or it could just be the wraparound checkering, which I should try on the A-Bolt.

I agree !
My first rifle as a new hunter was a brand new 'A' Bolt Medallion in .270
Great rifle,very accurate,especially in the hands of a new shooter and knocked down any deer that i shot at.

HOWEVER, the glossy finish and the drop out floor plate with detachable mag was something that made me finally sell it. The finish was ssssoooo shiney, i was scared to take into the bush for fear of scratching it ( which is stupid ) but that's how i felt about it.

I now have a nice 'Tikka' (wood/blue) oil finish, better rifle and i love taking it out into the bush
