My son is 12 and is interested in coming out to shoot 3 Gun with me. He has shot my 870 but it's just too big and heavy, so I'm looking for something smaller (20 ga).

My first thought was the 870 Youth, but I also liked the 11-87 Youth that I looked at. Also considered the Mossberg 500 and played with a Weatherby semi auto that looked and felt really nice.

Obviously, I'm not hung up on a pump action, but what's my best option out of these or are there others that I've missed?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm looking for something in 20 guage for my girlfriend for the same reason.

I think I have settled on a Mossberg SA-20 tactical. But there are none in Canada at the moment.

We can provide the Ithaca shotguns in 20ga in youth and female stocked models.

Quality shotguns that will last generations.

I started my 12 yo boy on a Rem 1100LT 20. It had a 21" special field barrel, which I had tubed. For hunting and on the range,,he was only allowed to load one round until I felt he was ready, at which time he could load 2 and so on. it is still a fav bird gun, especially with the short barrel and skeet choke. Hard to believe he's 28 now, but he still uses it,,,

I have the 870 youth 20 gauge, gf and my smaller buddies love it. I put a tactical stock with recoil reducing system from ATI there 0 kick now.

I would personally go with a good 870 Wingmaster 20ga, with one of the Mesa Tactical Enidine recoil reducing stocks, with a good Magpul CTR buttstock, to allow the ability to extend to your sons Length of Pull as he grows up, and/or also to be comfortable when shooting with heavier clothing on in colder conditions etc, and then the added bonus when hes ready to jump to the 12gauge then the stock set up can move right on to the 12gauge 870 no problems...

I look at pump shotguns much like comparing bolt action rifles to semi-auto rifles, it teaches better shot placement shot for shot for beginner shooters then having a semi-auto blasting away, but thats just how I view it...

Just my $0.02... :D

I bought for myself the Rem 870 Compact. Its the not youth model it just comes a with a shorter stock and spacers so you can adjust the length of pull. I use mine for grouse/rabbit hunting and now trap. I like the thing so much and have become so comfortable with the feel/swing/raising the gun I bought a rifled barrel and red dot for deer season this year.

Its easy to take apart and clean and works great. Also there are so many accessories and options you can do with an 870 and pretty much everyone sells parts for them. I highly recommend the 870 compact.

870 Compact Jr.
slim 20ga receiver (some manufacturers use a 12ga receiver for their 20s).
18" barrel, tapped for chokes. comes with a modified choke, buy him at least an imp cyl & full choke.

buy a $10 aluminum ambi sling plate adapter from ebay, and after 15 minutes with a file youll have a 12 -> 20 gauge stock adaptor which will allow you to use any 870 stock.
