Any recommendations on a youth 20 ga?

Looking at the mossberg 500 super bantam but wondering what else is out there? Would eventually be handed down to a smaller stature youth

I picked up a Benelli Nova youth 20 ga. for my grandson 2 yrs ago. he's 11 now...it has worked flawlessly!

I bought a mossberg bantam for the grande kids a few years ago. As it comes, it is very muzzle heavy and kicks pretty hard due to its light weight. I filled the Gille butt stick with BB’s, added 2 lbs to tje overall Weight, moved the balance point to just ahead of tje trigger guard and cut tje recoil probably by half. Quinton, my 8yo grandson shot it this summer, mostly skeet and trap and loves it. He shot around 600-800 rounds this summer. There may be better options out there, this is the only youth size I have any experience with but this one has served well so far ( Quinton is the second grandson to use it). Im sure there are many other good options to choose from but this mossy seems pretty good for its intended purpose

Shooter's Haven in Edmonton got in a bunch of Kral Turkish over/unders as the pandemic wound down. I think they must have ended up with more than they wanted, because they have been trying to blow them out for a couple years now. I won't testify as to quality, but if you want a 20ga O/U that you aren't afraid to cut down and reshape for a kid, $400 seems pretty accessible.

The sweetest 20 I've had was a cut down (stock) Rem 1100 with a 26" barrel. They come up used once in a while. Great little guns. I also had a Mossberg 500 compact in 20 and I agree with the above: recoil not much different than a 12. My last 20 was a Turkish TriStar semi which I do not recommend. Jamomatic.

I'm in ontario and would like to be able to see one in person before purchasing but the price sounds good haha

Thank you, that is actually very helpful

Noted, I'll likely be avoiding semi auto as it is but I'll definitely steer clear of the Tristar

This is what we have. It’s a model 510. If you zoom in you can see that the stick has an extension so it can be shortened for little guys but imo, the “short” version is pretty much useless unless the shooter is 2’ tall. 3887483256596440210.jpeg6851909672053127396.jpeg

I purchased my boy a Remington 870 Youth in 20g. I don't think there is much difference in recoil between it and a 12g when they are using similar loads. In fact, the smaller, lighter 20g might be a bit more jumpy. The only reason I'd go with a 20g Youth now is if there is an issue with the weight and size of a 12g.

The Browning BPS is a great 20 gauge, a bit heavy but that helps soak up the recoil for the young ones. They are available with a 22” barrel to keep it a bit more manageable. A bit different manual of arms with the bottom eject but nothing they won’t get used to.
As they are discontinued a used one would be your only option, but it’s a shotgun that will last a lifetime

There could definitely be a size issue. My daughter is quite small for her age so it's going to be a balancing act between size and recoil for sure

Thank you, I'll have to ask around and see if I can get a look at one!

I really wanted to get my kids into a youth/compact semi auto but between price of quality ones available and lack of availability of used ones I wound up with a youth 870 20ga. As far as fit and balance goes it’s almost perfect for both my boys. Possibly almost short for my older but there’s spacers included. It balances much better than the Mossberg.

Recoil can be an issue with lighter 20gauges but there are low recoil loads available. Albeit not always easy to acquire in Canada. I started my boys on 5/8oz handloads and they had zero issues with recoil or muzzle blast.

Who’s that CGN’r that did videos with the two young daughters that posted videos of them shooting their shotguns?
Great info on what he started them shooting and upgrading as they grew longer arms.
