I took my eleven year old son to my honey-hole Sunday evening to see if we could connect on one of the 4 bucks that I watched the previous evening. He harvested his first deer here the previous year.
We set up our stake out blind on the high spot in the field to watch the corner that I had seen the bucks in the previous night.
The wind was blowing in a direction that would eliminate one of the 4 gullies that the deer use to get into the field.
We sat for a couple of hours, then just as the sun was setting, 2 bucks appeared on the treeline 158 yards away. Both appeared to be young 3x4 bucks.
My boy needs to shoot prone with a bipod as the rifle is still a bit too heavy for him.
When we went prone, the small rise in the ground blocked our view of the deer.
We used the 'hill' to block their view from us as we belly crawled closer to the treeline. At around 80 yards we could crouch and move a little faster and still stay hidden. We had the wind in our favor. At 45 yards, we continued to belly crawl. Once we got to around 25 yards, the buck turned and started feeding towards us.
I talked my son through the shot as the deer finally spotted us and was looking intently to figure out what we were and probably decide if he should flee.
The shot broke and the deer fell. The 6mm Remington sent the 80 grain Barnes TTSX @ 3400 FPS through the front shoulder, smashing it, continued through the lungs, broke a rib on the far rear offside and was recovered under the skin. Bullet retained 65% of original weight after going through 2 or 3 feet of deer.
A great night...

80 TTSX after inflicting severe trauma

Congrats! Great story. My son is 7, looking forward to getting him out to take his first deer in a few years. Honing his skills with a 22 for now.Your close to some great hunting... have a cabin at White Lake and enjoy hunting Adams area.Judging by the smile on his face, he's hooked!
Nice work, Oscar

Congrats!

Opening day for us is Sept 15 (along with the GOS here) - but there is a special youth-only antlerless season we'll be hitting hard. Jr is hoping for his 1st deer this year (he turned 10 in May).

Oh he's hooked alright. He is a little sad that his big game season is over now. I get the white tail tag for bow hunting. He will be relegated to hunting grouse when they open. He just turned 11 at the end of August and I gave him a youth 870 in 20ga, so he's excited to get out and blast some ditch chickens and maybe some chuckar. We still need to get out and pattern the shottie before the 20th though. Nothing better than passing on the passion for hunting and the woods to a great kid who loves it as much as I do. I am so thankful. Now my 5 year old son is after me to go hunting. He will have to settle for .22 target shooting for a few more years though.... If only my 8 year old daughter was into it.... not likely though. She's a shopper like her mom...

Once he completes his Core and gets his hunter number he can get his own lic. and bag limited with a Junior hunting lic.

Actually, once he gets a hunter number, he gets a regular hunting licences and can get his own tags. At present he probably has a junior hunting licence that allows him to use the accompanying hunter's tags. With his own hunter number, he can also enter for LEH.
