I've narrowed my search down a bit for a rifle for my daughter. Looking at either a 700 SPS youth or a Howa 1500 youth, both in 7mm-08.

Looking for some feedback on whether one is any better than the other?

I have the youth 7-08 in the Vanguard (Howa) with the extra length stock spacer.

But for the stock being a bit clubby in the forward grip area, it is a wonderful rifle. The stock is a bit too "tupperware" but it serves the purpose very well. I did not bed nor free float the bbl.
The trigger is a nice clean break - relatively light (cant recall).

I put a 2-7 Redfield (new Leupold make) and the Talley one piece light weight rings/bases, and tried out some loads. 1 inch or under at 100 yds was easy to do. For the $450 odd dollars plus scope, it is a very good rifle.

The young lady who uses it could not be happier. It has a nice balance due to the light bbl up front, and the smaller stature shooters dont look like they are holding up a fence post and leaning backwards to support it.

With the spacer on - I like it as well. very accurate and a nice light weight rifle.

+1 for the vanguard youth. As long as it fits her properly and the cheek piece isn't too high. Overall finish and quality is hands down better than an sps IMO.

Both are well made rifles and both will shoot well. Triggers will suck on both but the vanguard is easily changed out.

Let your daughter decide what she likes best as it is for her

I am in the same boat - I am looking for a rifle for my wife an daughter - looked at a Vangaurd - my wife was not comfortable with the top loading and the floor plate - I am waiting for the Savage Trophy Hunter XP's in the youth model to get into canada and will go with it - it has the accutrigger and supposedly and upgraded weaver scope (we will see on that one) if the scope has to be traded out it will be - my 2cents...

Anyone check out the Savage youth model...It has a brake on it...and it is a nice looking (supposed to be accurate) gun!

With the brake a person should be ok to start off with full house 308 loads...

I would look to the Howa first because I dislike the Remington company and I would expect any problems with a 700 are more likely to show up in the budget SPS than other variants. But the 700 is fundamentally a good rifle and if you can get her the chance to try each for fit and handling, if not actually shooting, get the one she says feels more right to her.
