My son and daughter want to start competing in PRS Rimfire matches. They are 8 and 11.

Question for everyone. Are there age restrictions at matches, and what rifle does everyone recommend starting with?

Thanks in advance.

As long as a parent/guardian is willing to spot the kid, I don't think there is any age restriction. Check with rules from CRPS or local club.

wrt to rifle, overall weight is going to be a challenge when the rifle should be nose heavy enough to balance well on bags/props. So start with how heavy a rifle your kids can manage safely.

As long as the kids have a good understanding of gun handling and good with safety/trigger discipline, I would suggest a 10/22. Not having to operate a firearm between shots gives them more time to set up and to move. A lighter contour barrel can help min the weight. Same with a shorter barrel.

Swiss cheesing an aftermarket stock can help drop the weight to what they can carry. You want a very very light buttstock. Chopping the LOP can be very helpful as can adjusting the comb vs buttpad to fit their smaller stature.

wood stocks would make customising easier... but there a couple of polymer aftermarket stocks that are strong enough to lighten.

If you prefer a bolt, then the CZ family is likely the easiest to get accessories to suit.

If I can help, pm or email.

If you are into modding an adult stock to fit kids - do not overlook the grip circumference or length from the hand's grip to the trigger - was a mistake I made with our son - I thought just making butt stock shorter was enough - not so - with his kids, I made the stocks to have smaller grip as well, and matching trigger pull length. Small kids have small hands - have to make the entire thing fit, if you start - else wait for them to grow into a bigger stock shape.

I kinda beat this drum a lot but have them try a Tikka, damn thing just fits especially with the upright grip insert. The stocks are already on the short side and dirt cheap so hacking one down won't hurt much.
Extremely short and smooth bolt throw is very easy for the kids. My none to tall 11 year old runs it just fine.

A stock 10/22 or perhaps A22 could work but honestly they are a rather rough platform until you spend a lot of time making things right.
The Tikka needs a trigger adjustment and torque tuning the screws.

I took my 10 year old to his first shoot last fall.
He had a blast. We used a cz457 synthetic with an MDT LSS RF chassis but with an AR style buffer tube and culpable stock. This way we could both shoot the same rifle. I only had to figure out the holds for the one rifle setup and could help him with the dials on the stage. I for one have trouble figuring out how I’m going to shoot the stage, drop for the stage, help spot and score. Now add in having to watch the boy. It made it so much easier using the one rifle between the two of us.
Over all it was great for both of us and we look forward to this coming season.

That looks like the Heffley range, and I think I might have seen you guys there last weekend. I told my kids that there was a boy about their age at the shoot, so now they're pretty excited about giving it a try as well. Have to get them more comfortable with some of the basics first I think, but I might bring them to the next match to at least watch.

My kid is only 19 months and I'm already looking to see what kind of 22lr I can buy him. I already bought the red ryder 2 pack of bb guns lol
