Hi All,
Looking to buy a shotgun for my 12 year old daughter. I would prefer a semi due to a little lighter recoil. She did shoot skeet with a mossberg 500 which had a little to much recoil for her. She would of course only have one shell in the magazine/tube until she learns how to shoot it and operate it correctly. This will be something she uses for waterfowl hunting when the time is right. I don't really want to buy the bank as well. Affordable is key.
Thanks!

I picked up a youth 1100 in 20 gauge a couple years ago. Decided to hop on it when it came up. It works very well and has an adjustable stock (spacers) to change LOP as they grow. My boy is a bit small for it still, but I have used it with success on grouse.

The turkish made semis, hatsun or stoeger branded or others, are typically light weight and have the stock fittings to adjust LOP and cast. I know of guys using them for trap/skeet with good reliability. I personally use the weatherby SA-08 another turkish gun but I use 28 g. This has very light recoil, much less than 20g, but it is only a duck gun (with expensive non-steel ammo) for close ducks and better shooters than me. If you think duck hunting will be a rare event then your combo-purpose 20ga makes sense. If serious duck hunting is the eventual aim I would go the separate gun route, one for training and one for hunting. Finding a size that suits her size now and then is the real factor to consider. Great post!

Who is our resident expert who has his two girls shooting and cooking their kills??
Haven't seen his posts for awhile, but if memory serves me correct she shoots a Weatherby SA08 in 20 gauge in a Youth Gun too.
An A-5 would be a heirloom down the road for sure, and the search would be a treasure hunt of sorts too.
Good Hunting.
Rob

My daughter started on a 20ga Beretta Al391 RL (reduced length). She still uses it as a young adult. Not the cheapest or easy to find, but it has been perfect in every way.
