I finally got out yesterday to shoot my M-48. Previously, I have read that some Mausers have a very high POI and I was interested to see what I got.

I only ran one box of Federal 170gr through it, mixed between some offhand plinking and water jug shooting, with two groups shot from a rest at 100yds. It is hitting about 8-9" high at 100yds with the rear sight set to 200m, which is the closest setting. I was very pleased with it in general. I had one 4 shot group just over 3" and a 5 shot about the same, with 4 in 2" and one flyer that pulled it out. I was shooting off a semi-bench rest, with a front rest sitting on a stump and me sitting in a lawn chair, with no tail bag. I figure 3" is about as good as my eyes are good for with iron sights, so that part is very acceptable. If I can sort that 8" high issue, all will be well.

It was mentioned in a previous post that it is possible to get a taller front sight to bring the POI down some, is this correct and where would I find one for my rifle? I would like a point blank setting of around 150yds, as I will never be shooting much farther than maybe 300yds with it. If I want to shoot farther, the rear sight adjusts out to 2000m.

Thanks,
Mark

Handloading with hotter loads than the wimpy factory stuff may bring your sights closer to point of aim and point of impact. The factory 8mm ammo is no better than 30-30. Hornady makes a nice 195 grain bullet that does well in the 8x57.

Also, your sights were regulated for a 198gr projectile, not a 170gr projectile so also try using the proper bullet weight (200gr ammo should not be hard to find commercially) before messing with the sights.

Last I recall, there was decent Igman ammo in 198gr at districorp you could order.

Handloads are on the list, I just bought a couple boxes of commercial ammo to test drive it and get some brass.

170gr was all I found locally (Calgary). I am all for trying the heavier stuff if I can find some. Can anybody tell me what the muzzle velocity was for the standard 198gr round? I wouldn't mind having a standard load to match to with some of my handloads.

WAIT until you try it real Yugoslav 8mm ammo which should be here this summer.

I will keep an eye on the site, John. Surplus, FMJ, I assume?

Mine was dead on at 100 with Igman ammo.

Excellent news, I will look for the Igman stuff before I write off the sights.

Thanks,
Mark

I shoot Igman 198 gr almost right on at 200 meters, about 6" high at 100 meters. It likes the 198 gr much better then the 170. Great shooter with the open sights.

On a side note does anyone know where to get a sling for it. I bought mine at Marstar and it didn't come with one. Thanks.

I am going to have to work harder at finding ammo. Anybody know where I can find the Igman stuff in Calgary? Districorp says they cannot get more Igman ammo and they do not list 8x57 on their site. I sent them an email about it, but have not received a reply yet.

Marstar list a sling, but I haven't bought one yet. You try first and let me know how it works.:D

I will agree it shot very well. I was quite pleased with my groups, given the shaky rest I was using and open sights at 100yds.

I would e-mail john about it. As I recall, all the M48's came with slings so maybe they forgot to ship you one?
