I was given this rifle. Prior owner told me it was a Yugo Mauser. It has a four digit serial number. All parts including stock are matching. I have looked on line and see some differences between mine and the Yugo. Mine is not marked M48 anywhere. Upper hand guard does not extend back to the breech and does not appear to have been designed to do that. Butt plate is not cupped but is flat. Under the crest appears to be a year stamped but I am struggling to see the last two digits.....19?? Here are some photos taken quickly. I can do better when time permits. Thanks for any help. David

After WW2 there were a lot of surplus rifles lying around.... Yugoslavia refurbished many K98's and put new barrels on many of them.... they generally shoot aces. I have one and its dialed in perfectly with factory S&B 196gr SPCE rounds.

This is originally a K98 produced in Czechoslovakia then refurbished by the newly formed Yugoslavia for use in their military until being phased out in favour of the purpose built M48 rifles.

Or I could lie to you and tell you it's a $200 sporter that you should dump on me for a deal. I paid $499 for mine from trade ex about 3 years ago. They have gone up a bit since then but still more affordable than German mausers.

Purpose built M48 now go for around $500 I’m guessing Yugo captured K98 might fetch around or slightly more than Russian capture prices now, maybe in the 700-800 ballpark

Thanks everyone for the quick and informative responses. I now know what I have. I may not share this with my benefactor as he may want it back. Hee hee. Much great info in the brains of members here. David

Looks to say 1940. Nice rifle, I'm sure it will shoot nice.
I wouldn't think a scrubbed and reatamped yugo k98 would be worth more than a Russian capture k98. Less if anything. The RCs are completely mismatched, and generally in rougher shape, but most retain original marking and components. The Yugo scrub job, restamping, and rebarreling, detracts more. Of course someone will chime in now and say that unless it's a mint all matching original, it's worthless.

One of the truisms of the online gun forum, indeed...

Having said that, you mustn't have gotten the memo - Russo-K98s are now worth $1000+. Crazy times.
