Hi people
Ive been lurking here and have been extreamly interested.
I have used the search too, but must not be using the correct terminology.
What brand, model rifles are you guys using to shoot up to 1000m,
or snipping in general. It seems the caliber is .308 why not say 300m or 7mm?
Basically if someone wanted to start shooting what recommendations would you propose for equipment inclluding a scope?
I have also lurked elsewhere and there was alot of talk about remingtons 700 tactical rifle used by LE's. Now everyone Ive inquired about that rifle or remi's in gereral to me to stay away from them. Alot of gunsmiths too. Whats your concensus on that? Does remi reall suck that bad.
 
I would say Remington 700's DO NOT SUCK. My LTR .308 and VS .22-250 both shoot 1/2 to 3/4 MOA, both are stock with no modifications.
 
Go to the DCRA/ORA's web site and look for the dates of a match or practice. You're looking at the Spring now. Go to one or two and have a look. Read the rules too. The ORA/DCRA runs a beginner's day periodically too. Usually at CFB Borden's Mons Range.
300 magnums are used, but not for regular matches. There are matches that require .308/7.62mm's only and matches that allow any rifle with any sight. It's all on the DCRA's rules page.
7 mm's don't get used much because of the lack of match grade bullets.
Commercial rifles are where custom target rifles start. Usually just the action with the barrel, trigger and stock replaced. Lots of target rifles started as a Rem 700. Whoever told you to stay away from them is confused.
Mind you, just scoping a bolt action rifle does not make it a sniper's rifle.

There is a 1000 yd match at Mons range at camp Borden Oct7th. Check out the ORA website for directions. If you come through the Lisle gate, Mons range is the first one on the left. There will be a group of shooters just off the road shortly after 8am. The 1000yd firing line is right next to the fence.

They will be happy to answer any questions you may have, and you can see the equipment first hand.

Its only about 1 hour north of you, the weather should be nice, and you could even invite a significant other for the fall colours.

Take that advice with a grain of salt.

Remington may or may not be the best depending on who you ask, but they are extremely popular, and have a great reputation...especially the 700 action. Some people favour other companies, and you yourself may find that you prefer another company over a Remington too, but do yourself a favour and try them out before you rule them out.

I may actually come out then suday. The gates open @ 8am when does it start and offically end?

Match starts around 9am. Usually 2 relays before lunch and 1 after lunch. Wraps up by 330-4PM.

"...the weather should be nice..." As in hot. CF ranges are dusty and dry as all get out too. Take lots of water with you.
"...stating they are LE only..." As in they can't get a 700 because they're LEO? That's nonsense.
Epp's is listing a new 700 POLICE LTR in .223. Not cheap though. $1319.65. Plus a bunch of other models and chamberings. Go to the Mons match then, if time and gas permits, go up to Epp's. Open 10 to 5pm Sundays. Go out the Angus gate, over to the 400 and they're 15 minutes past Orillia at the speed limit. Stay on the main highway when it becomes Hwy 11 just north of Barrie. About a half hour to 45 minutes from Borden. Be advised that the speed limit drops along Hwy 11 and is fairly strictly enforced by the OPP.

They've actually told you that?

Remington does say that they would prefer that their LE models not be sold to the general public, but many shops do anyways. If they really wanted to stop it they could...they probably do it just to make them look better by not encouraging the sale of dangerous LE weapons to us lowly civillians.

There is nothing wrong with remington rifles, but their LE model is nothing special , for sure.

Savage also builds good rifles for long range work.
The big advantage of these two rifles is there are lots of aftermarket parts available.

Be prepared to put some cash down for a good set up however, because it's not just the rifle, there are a bunch of componants that make up a good long range rig, the ammo, scope ( or irons) bipod ( or sling), etc , all cost money for quality gear.

Where does this #### come from? In reference to staying away from Rems in general and smiths poohing them? I've won a few matches using rigs based on a couple rems over the last few years.

Take Norm up on his advice. You really need to show up to Mons tomorrow before you start building ANYTHING!

If you do I'll guarantee you save yourself some money and a if not the money certainly a lot of headaches in the build process...

You'll see guys shooting the 1000 yard rigs first hand.

Tomorrow is suppose to be an exceptional day weatherwise. No reason not to be there. This is your best opporltunity to start right other than an Intro Day.
 
Decide on the game you want to play. Get the rules, and see what competes well in that class.

One size rarely fits all.

Savage and Rems will work very well for the base to build an accurate rifle.

I prefer the Savage/Stevens as less work and money needs to be spent to get them shooting great. Quality match barrels is a must to be competitive. From there, stocks, optics, support gear and reloading gets the rig functional.

With ALOT of practise, you will become competitive. Enjoy the journey.

Well it Sunday and I couldnt get there sircumstances beyond my control. Its too bad since I was looking forward to it. I guess Im going to have to wait till the next time whenever that is. Kinda sucks.
