I bought one of the last of these today from SFRC.

Has anyone received the one that they ordered? What are your thoughts and/or comments?

What kind of condition was it in? Is it unfired? The picture they had it looked brand new.

Listing said unissued surplus, I am anticipating it being covered in oil and will need a deep cleaning.

Any comments and/or pictures would be appreciated.

I bought one quite a while ago; first hand-gun after getting back into the sport. It was new in the grease. It was a lot of fun, but I could not shoot it well; I also discovered that there were no disciplines in which I could compete with it. I got over it, bought more versatile firearms, and have not missed not having it. I now have a GP100 so if I want recoil and noise, I can shoot .357 magnum or .45 ACP +P from my 1911... but I don't; I usually just shoot low powered target rounds tuned for accuracy.

Yup, unfired and very sticky. Some boiling water, brake clean etc. is in your future.

For old times sake I could recommend the dish washer… sure did clean up a m305. Should be easy to search.

Mine was well-coated with cosmoline and looked more or less unfired. Disassemble and put the parts in a bath of mineral spirits (Varsol), then scrub any crusty cosmoline deposits off with an old toothbrush. After drying off the mineral spirits, hose it down liberally with G96 gun oil, wipe off excess, reassemble, and wipe down again.

For the money, they're a fun pistol to shoot. The trigger is quite heavy, which makes any kind of appreciable accuracy difficult to obtain. However, ammo is cheap, and is satisfyingly powerful for a semi-auto. It's the SKS of the handguns - not going to win any contests, but a great addition to your collection for the cost.

Mine was definitely unfired, and had an oily residue, but it wasn't greasy or dirty. Could have come off the line a few months ago.

I washed it in hot soapy water, then rinsed it in exceptionally hot water. That makes the water evaporate quickly. A quick spray with g96 lube and its good to go. Thats how we always clean the black powder guns after shooting, and no, it won't cause your gun to rust. Save the brake cleaner for killing hornet nests, its not really necessary for guns...

I'd highly recommend getting a 9mm barrel for it, if you can find one for the 57 (i put one in that was made for a Chinese tokarev, it required some dremel love), but being able to shoot 9mm is nice. Less recoil, and the flexibility of being able to still feed it if the 7.62x25 ammo supply has some dry spells (and for reloaders, its very difficult to find tokarev dies that are carbide)

I have an M57 and thought of buying a Chinese 9mm barrel. Lever Arms sells the Chinese 9mm barrel with 2 magazines for $140. Did you have to modify the M57 magazine for use with the 9mm ammo?

I bought the lever arms kit, so it comes with two mags. The lever kit mags have the follower trimmed at the back, and then there is a spacer that runs full height up the mag, at the back (cuz the 9mm is shorter than the 25mm in OAL). So of you modded the mag it would be difficult to go back.

Although i haven't taken the TT mag apart. If the follower spring has enough clearance (say 3mm) then you could home-job a follower and then slide in a plastic spacer. For that matter (and again, I haven't tried) the original mag should be able to cycle 9mm rounds, the physics are the same.

The barrel trimming on the tt33 barrel was... significant (but also a bubba install), properly done its likely safer. Although I still see places like marstar and wolverine occasionally popping up surplus tt-33 for $250ish (or $350 for the tokarev two tone that is a 9mm from marstar, still in stock), so for those less inclined to take the risk...

Know how everyone poop-talks the tokarevs? Thats a load of BS. The grip fits the hand pretty well, the trigger is fine (and simple to lighten up if you want, the sights are really good, and the gun is accurate for a pistol. My only complaints are it really randomly scatters the empty brass, and the cartridges get really sooty (compared to my g17 or shadow, when shooting the same blend). Like an sks, everyone shout have one...

Dremel was enough to make it functional, but the contact points on the spring and barrel aren't great. Works fone though, only stovepipes on soft rounds (so no win white box) I did the mod one handed (didn't want to set down my beers) so someone with patience and skill should be able to make it work prettier. But you won't be selling either the barrel (material missing) or the gun (wear spots) as new... So i wouldn't actually RECOMMEND doing the install on a tt-57, especially when it just perfectly drops into a tt-33. But I've hammered mine in there now, so might as well use it.

Adding the ability to shoot 9MM sounds like too much effort. I have a couple 9mm pistols already.

The 7.62x25 is interesting mainly due to cost, I have found it for cheaper than 9mm.

Thanks for the input guys.

It looks like SFRC still has a couple for sale!!
