Zastava MP22 / Z5 vs. Savage Mark II G, who has/had both? On the fence...

Any input on why to pick one over the other?

Looking to buy my first 22lr and
have a soft spot for wood and blued.

Can't justify the money for a CZ 452/455 so looking
for the next best thing
The Zastava is about $100 more, but is it worth the extra money?

I almost bought a Savage last summer, until I tried a friend's...

That "safety trigger" thingermabob drove me crazy enough that I doubled down and bought a CZ instead.

Some people love the blade safety "lightening trigger" - others despise it. There are enough of them around that you should be able to get a loaner for a day at the range. In terms of accuracy, no complaints at all, the Savages are very accurate.

I'm tempted by the Zastava, they look really well made, have a proper trigger, and the price isn't too bad. Just haven't tried one yet, and I already have more .22s than I can really justify.

Try the Savage... The trigger will either be a deal breaker, or not.

.... Oh d@mnit... now you got me poking around Corwin-Arms again... That's going to cost me $$ and some 'splaining to the wife...

I have the Mark II G. For the money, great shooter. Downside is the wood isn't the greatest. Also some FTE problems.
Can't speak to Zastava, but if you are going to spend that $100 more, I'd save a bit more for the CZ. The show up on EE just above your budget.

Edit: Spending some time at corwin-arms those zavastas sure look pretty. If wood makes the difference and the budget isn't in the cz range I'd go that route.

Ive had a lot of savages and sold every one with no regrets. Fit and finish wasn't all that great and never got real good accuracy out of them. The zastava's I had I regret selling. They shoot with my cz no problem. The trigger is fully adjustable and can be adjusted to be one heck of a trigger. With the cup pent options I see no need to buy a savage.

Do I read it correct; you mean you regret having sold your zastava's?
Have not had a chance to hold one so am also wondering how well the machined parts/metal are finished. (I mean burrs, tooling marks etc. not finish color)

Yes I regret selling the Zastavas. The finish on all the ones I have seen are great. Action was smooth no marks that I could see really. Quality is close to cz I'd say. The bluing on mine was very nice. Have yet to see blueing like that on any rifle less then $900.

Agreed. But for my part i kept mine in WMR. Love it and not going to buy a CZ later on , as long as Zastava continue to offer such incredible value.

I was just in your position and after handling a few in the $400 and under range the Zastava won hands down. Beautiful wood, great sights and an action us smooth as butter. Jus need to find some 10 round mags.
