Zastava Synthetic vs wood stock?

Hey everyone!
I was wondering if Zastava rifle owners could shine in: How are their synthetic stocks? Might want to pull the trigger on one (in 300 win mag) and debating between wooden stock (with sights) or a sight-less synthetic model. I currently have an M96 (bubba'ed stock) with mauser-type sights (had to remove back sight as it interfered with scope) and the front sight just snags on every branches when walking through the woods. In a perfect world, I'd get sight-less with wooden stock, but alas, that's not an option.

Does it feel like cheap plastic? Is there some weight to the stock? Zastava catalog says the rifle weights is the same whether the stock is wood or synthetic. I think that seems odd, but never really handled synthetic stocks before.

Would a synthetic stock also need to be bedded?

Cheers everyone!

David

Feel like every other inexpensive plastic stock...even with their wood I find one rifle will have very nice wood, the one beside it on the rack will have average wood.

As for bedding, with my experience zastava rifles are pretty accurate out of the box and unless you are shooting for maximum accuracy it won't make a big difference

Fairly decent plastic, way above Savage Axis or Ruger American stocks. I find them comfortable, they use a pressure point which is nice.

I will definitely be the weakess link in this, so I guess a bedding job is out of the question.

Very nice rifle: What caliber? Can I ask if the stock seems full or if it's hollow?

I lied, I once handled a Remington 710,...and then I bought an M96 with a wooden stock. Never looked back ;-)

What's a pressure point? Not familiar with that concept.

What Hitzy said. For not being a high end replacement, the one that comes on the Zastava rifles is plenty good. Yes its hollow, its a molded stock. But its as rigid as whats on most factory rifles these days if not more. I'd rate the Tikka above it for example but you're not paying Tikka money.

Honestly the rifle handles way better with it too than with the 2x4 they put on it from the factory.

I have couple with synthetic. One is aftermarket b and c stock and other was bought with rifle and it feels like a hogue soft rubber model. Find wood stocks to be soft clumsy feel to them

7x64... pressure point in the stock is used on a lot of skinny barrels, it puts upward pressure about 3" from front the end of the stock, makes shot to shot more consistent.

Oh, didn't know about such a thing. Very cool. I'll try to do a bit more research on it. Thanks!

Thanks everyone, strongly leaning towards the synthetic stocked zastava! Also saw a great video on how to do a camo job for it...might be tempted to give it a go.

Cheers!

Where you attempting more pressure there, i see cardstoxk or something under the fore end tip?

Just finished the camo job on mine! Far from perfect, but will do the job : I like it! If I had to do it over, I would use more OD green as the background primary color...I find it's still a bit too dark looking.

Used Krylon camo paints with a matte finish (5-6 coats).

Just have to get the recoil pad replaced and I'll be in business for this year.

I have the 300 zastava synth and it doesn't feel high end it. It just feels light and serviceable. I'd be surprised if the wooden stock felt this light, I find that hard to believe.

I have a limbersaver on mine and it's very pleasant too shoot!

vpsalin, how did you install your limbsaver on your 300 zastava synth? Do you have any pictures of how it was done? Also, did you fill the buttstock portion with anything (so it doesn't emit that hollow plastic sound when banged on things?

Which ammo does yours shoot best out of curiosity?

Cheers!

I can't seem to find the thread that explains which limb saver product to buy but I remember it was a remington-limb saver model that gives 97% accurate fit on the zastava. It just screws right on, nothing special to explain there. You just have to find the exact model to order. I wish I remembered which, but I don't. Maybe email Limb Saver about it...

It might of been a historic Remington model, which used to be produced by Zastava for North American market, I'm not sure. I don't think it was the rem 700 version limbsaver pad.

No, mine is hallow sounding plastic and that doesn't bother me one bit.

Probably a Remington 798, it was a rebranded Zastava rifle.
