Hey all,
I have been thinking about buying a 17HMR and kind of like the looks of the Zastava Z5. How you guys who own one like them, How is the accuracy and the trigger pull. Any issues common to the rifle etc. My other choice would be the Ruger American 17HMR with preferably a 22" barrel though I hear the 17HMR doesn't loose any velocity with the 18"one.
I just like the feel and balance with the longer barrel. Trying to keep the cost under $500.00 and I am not a Savage guy period, so anything else you would recommend in a reasonable priced Bolt Action?

Thanks for any input.

Jim

I have a zastava in 22lr and 17, haven't shot the 17 yet, so can't comment on it that entirely right now

but the 22's do have issues, trigger is crap out of the box but easy to adjust and will end up pretty nice imo, the inletting around the bolt handle needs to be relieved as the bolt handle makes contact with the wood, reliable feeding required tweaking the magazine - bending the lips on the ramp and some people clip a coil off the spring as loading the 5th round is reported to be difficult (not an issue with my mags), extraction was finicky between different ammo (recently picked up new springs to help the extractors but not yet installed - there is a thread about a guy who made the fix on here a couple months back), I free floated the barrel and rubbed a few coats of oil in the stock and really made the grain pop

the 22 has 4 slots on the receiver to mount scope rings, the 17 only has 2 which is quite frustrating for where I like to position my scopes

after all of the above, I am still very happy with the gun and is on my never sell list...but there was some frustration and tweaking required to make the rifle perfect, something to be aware of if you're not into that type of work

you can get a synthetic stocked ruger American rimfire in 17hmr, also check out marlin rimfires as well if you're not into savage...or wait for a used cz to pop up in your price range

Had 3 Zastava's. Loved them all. Good sights, Well made, well finished, accurate and well priced. What not to love. Some i heard had ejection issues but someone on this forum replaced the extractor spring and remedied the issue.Cheers!

I have one in 22wmr, no real issues other then it only likes 3 rounds in the mag or they hang up. Trigger is adjustable and decent, shoots decent, wood and metal fit/finish is pretty good, nice to carry and shoot.

Thanks for the input so far guys looking forward to hearing of anyone else's experience with the Zastava Z5 or even the Ruger American 17's. Someone mentioned Marlins but again I have zero experience with them and always thought of them the same way as I do Savages.....Maybe I am wrong?

I have a z5 and a Remington model 5 in 22, they are great, accurate rifles. Had no feed issues in either but the zastava did have extractor failures, that was fixed with replacement springs from a fellow on the forum. I adjusted the triggers on both and made them very good in my opinion. I would certainly buy one again even with the few issues, they were easy to fix and now run flawlessly.

My 17 is a Savage 93G heavy barrel... It's ridiculously accurate and made in Canada too. It's not as pretty as the Z5 but it does shoot, and ,10 round mags that work are nice to have too.
