Hi Res Picture

Is anyone interested in a review about Zastava's synthetic stocked mauser currently available on the Cdn market?

There is very little in the way of information and quality assessments on any of these rifles. Certainly nothing first hand other than a few other vague discussion board comments. Zastava has been making mausers for decades and yet I've not read one descent review.

I have one of these rifles in the mail as I type this. Perhaps a good winter project and addition to my blog?

if these are the same as the remington 798/799's, then it's a fine commercial mauser '98. Personally, I don't think that the m98 action is well-suited to civilian use - m98 derivatives like the ruger 77, CZ and BRNO's and the like are all much better.

The biggets question I have is the quality of the synthetic stock. Is it tuperware with tons of flex and give or a good solid variety of synthetic stock.?

Its a Serbian made FN clone.

I shot a few different Zastava's years ago in RSA. They were always a little rough but good value and rugged. Many were finished/semi customized by 'smiths to become very nice rifles.

I bought a Z-98 with a walnut stock, and it's a great rifle. Cycles a little rough at first, but it's smoothing up.

suited to civilian use?

Why dont you think its good for civilian use but okay for commercial use - What do you define as commercial use? Just curious

Commercial; civilian - same thing. It's a well built version of the m98, but the m98 (well built or not) is not my choice for a sporting gun. All the ones I've ever tried are loose and sloppy - a good thing when you're dealing with battlefield conditions, but I'd rather have something more refined, like the m98 derivatives I noted, rather than an m98 copy.

That would be a fine idea to do a review on the Zastava Mauser. I bought a Charles Daly Field Grade Mauser (made by Zastava) a few months ago and I'm quite happy with it. It was a little stiff and rough at first but after cycling the bolt a couple thousand times it smoothed up nicely. I think it is a better hunting rifle than any of the other low cost options out there.
